The 2023-2024 season of the Premier League has brought an unexpected twist for Manchester United, which, under the leadership of interim manager Michael Carrick, seems to have found new momentum. However, fresh rumors about the potential replacement of Carrick are stirring the corridors of Old Trafford. Journalist Ben Jacobs, speaking to The United Stand channel on YouTube, revealed that former Everton manager Roberto Martinez is being considered to take the helm of the team next season.
Since Carrick took charge, the Red Devils have secured five wins and one draw in six league matches, propelling themselves to fourth place in the table, with the clear goal of securing a spot in the Champions League. However, the club’s management continues to explore options for a long-term successor to Ruben Amorim, who was dismissed from his position. Carrick, for his part, is seizing the opportunity to solidify his name as a candidate for the new permanent manager.
Roberto Martinez, currently in charge of the Portugal national team, brings with him extensive experience. The 52-year-old coach has previously managed Belgium and, before that, had stints with Everton and Wigan Athletic in the Premier League. His achievement of winning the FA Cup with Wigan in the 2012/13 season, despite the team being relegated, and the feat of guiding Everton to their second-best finish in the league (fifth) in 2013/14, are milestones in his career. In the 2024/25 season, under his guidance, Portugal won the UEFA Nations League, and now Martinez is preparing his team for a remarkable performance in the upcoming World Cup.
Meanwhile, the possibility of Martinez leaving the Portuguese national team after the tournament to return to club football is creating a buzz. The coach has also been linked to Celtic, which is seeking a new manager to replace Martin O’Neill. However, the recent interest from Manchester United in Martinez could change the course of these discussions.
In a statement that did not go unnoticed, Martinez praised United captain and Portuguese star Bruno Fernandes, highlighting that the player does not receive the recognition he deserves. In a conversation with club icon Gary Neville on the show The Overlap, Martinez stated: “I think he is evaluated very unfairly. Being captain of Manchester United for the last three or four years must have been incredibly difficult on all levels. What I appreciate about him is that he never hides.”
He continued to describe Fernandes as an emotional leader, inspiring his teammates to respond in adversity. “When his teammates see that Bruno is upset, they react. He cares for every player and would never leave anyone behind. Furthermore, he was the player with the most minutes in Europe last season. That says everything about his availability and commitment.”
In addition to these changes in the coaching staff, Manchester United is also preparing a “monstrous” investment in signing young Inter Milan and Italian national team forward Pio Esposito, who is also on Arsenal’s radar. At just 20 years old, Esposito has already made 35 appearances this season, despite competing with stars like Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez.
Finally, goalkeeper Andre Onana, who is on loan at Trabzonspor, expressed his determination to return to Manchester United to fight for his place in the starting lineup, although his chances of success appear slim. The club’s future remains uncertain, but the anticipation and excitement surrounding potential changes are growing each day.
