The world of football is in turmoil, and the latest news from the Europa League promises to stir the passions of Italian fans. In a revealing statement, Frederic Massara, director of AS Roma, shared his expectations about the exciting clash against Bologna, but did not hesitate to express his concern: the Italian derby is not beneficial for the UEFA ranking.
With the draw for the round of 16 of the Europa League, Roma and Bologna will face each other in two matches that promise to be epic, but both clubs from Serie A would prefer a different outcome. The matchup could have been against opponents from other countries, such as Genk for Roma and Freiburg for Bologna. Instead, the internal battle raises questions about the impact on the prestige of Italian football on the European stage.
In an interview with Sky Sport Italia, Massara commented: “It may lose a bit of the charm that comes from a European game, but we know it will be a great match, with a lot at stake.” He did not hide his frustration regarding Italy’s ranking situation in the UEFA, where Serie A currently occupies fifth place in the coefficient rankings. Despite a slight improvement, with the gap to Germany and Spain reduced to just 0.20 points, the reality is that only four Italian clubs remain in European competitions this season, with Atalanta being the sole representative in the Champions League.
Massara did not spare praise for Bologna, which, according to him, is regaining the performance level of previous seasons. “Certainly, there will be two great matches. Bologna is a strong team, returning to the levels of success that we know,” he added, promising that the clash will be a spectacle.
Marco Di Vaio, Bologna’s director, also spoke out, suggesting that a confrontation with a foreign club could have generated even more motivation for his team. “I believe an international match would have brought a different charm,” reflected Di Vaio. Massara, in response, acknowledged the quality of the opposing team and the immediate impact of striker Donyell Malen at Roma, who has already scored five goals in his first six appearances. “He had an immediate positive impact, but Bologna also has valuable players, so we must be alert,” concluded Massara.
An event that could be a landmark for Italian football is turning into a dilemma, debating between internal rivalry and the need to strengthen Serie A’s presence in European competitions. Football fans are eagerly anticipating this clash, which will undoubtedly be an exciting spectacle on the European stage.
