Surprising international recognition for Nuno Mendes ahead of the Portugal-Spain match: Lamine Yamal and Cucurella did not hold back in their praise for the Portuguese full-back, raising expectations for the decisive Round of 16 clash in the 2026 World Cup. With pressure mounting and the eyes of the football world fixed on Toronto, Mendes is preparing for a confrontation that could mark a turning point in his career and in the national team's journey in this competition.

The left-back of Paris Saint-Germain, a key player in Roberto Martínez's starting eleven, addressed the upcoming match against Spain in a press conference on Friday, highlighting the decisive nature of the encounter scheduled for 8:00 PM on Monday: “Now we are in the World Cup, whoever loses goes home, we are fully focused on this game and it is the most important for us.” The pressure is at its peak, and Nuno Mendes does not hide the fact that, at this moment, past achievements mean little: “We do not base ourselves on that, it went well at that time, but now we are in the World Cup.”

The praise was not limited to mere formalities. Lamine Yamal, the young Spanish prodigy, publicly confessed that Nuno Mendes was the toughest opponent he has faced to date. The Portuguese player was not indifferent: “I’ve seen the video. Obviously, he is a player with a lot of quality, and we will play against each other; it’s a good duel. I like playing against him; he’s a young player with a lot of quality who can make a difference in the game, so it’s always a good duel.” Cucurella, the Spanish full-back for Chelsea, also recently stated that Nuno Mendes is for him “the best full-back in the world,” something that filled the Portuguese with pride: “It’s always nice to hear that kind of praise; I’m happy. I’ve met him personally when we played against Chelsea, and we talked a bit. He’s an excellent person and a good player as well. I try to focus on my goal, which is to help the national team. The rest makes me happy too, but I focus on the game, which is the most important thing for me, being able to help the National Team.”

In a highly pressurized environment, Mendes seeks to downplay the individual duel with Yamal, focusing instead on the collective and the importance of team strategy: “The collective is much more important than the individual. If we defend well and manage to prevent the ball from reaching Lamine, that would be a good start. The most important thing is the collective; then the individual will come to the fore.” When asked what would irritate an opponent the most in a duel with him, he responded with humility and pragmatism: “It’s difficult to speak as if I were the opponent. I can only speak for myself; it will be a very difficult duel against a very complicated team that knows how to play and possess the ball, and we also want that.”

Physical management has been another unavoidable topic in this World Cup, marked by intense matches and a demanding schedule. Nuno Mendes acknowledged that the season has been “very complicated, with many difficult games,” but assured that both he and his teammates are managing their efforts well: “We have two more days to recover and to put everything we have into practice for the game. Yesterday we were able to take advantage of a bit of time.” He also revealed that on the rare day off, he took the opportunity to “eat an açaí, hang out with my teammates, and get some fresh air to clear my head a bit.”

Looking back, Mendes was named man of the match in the last Portugal-Spain Nations League game and even scored a goal, but he rejects any excess confidence: “If we could repeat the result, that would be good. But that game is in the past; now it's a different game, a different competition. We have to approach it the same way, but obviously do a little better than we have done so far. We can and have the capacity to do that; it's our goal to improve with each game and each training session, and we intend to do that going forward.”

With words of respect for the opponent but unwavering ambition, Nuno Mendes is preparing to lead the National Team in one of the most anticipated matches of the 2026 World Cup. A victory over Spain is crucial not only to secure a place in the quarter-finals but also to bolster the confidence of a generation that dreams of glory. The Mendes-Yamal duel promises to be one of the tournament's highlights, but for the Portuguese international, the true strength lies in the power of the collective. The next chapter will be written on Monday in Toronto, in a game that could go down in the history of Portuguese football.
