Ange Postecoglou, the former Tottenham manager, made explosive statements about his old club, asserting that Spurs are not a “big club” and revealing frustrations regarding the lack of support for signings during his tenure. During an appearance on the show “The Overlap,” the Australian coach did not hold back in criticizing the team’s approach to building a competitive squad.

“They are not a big club!” Postecoglou exclaimed, referring to Tottenham’s current situation following the dismissal of Thomas Frank. The manager, known for his frankness, expressed his belief that the club needed experienced players from the Premier League, such as Bryan Mbeumo, Pedro Neto, Antoine Semenyo, and Marc Guehi, but was prevented from signing them due to salary restrictions.

Postecoglou did not hesitate to question the club’s philosophy emblazoned throughout the facilities: “To dare is to do.” He argued that, despite the construction of an impressive stadium and top-notch training facilities, Tottenham’s financial reality does not align with the aspirations of a club that considers itself big. “What are they trying to do? When we look at the spending, especially on the wage structure, it is clear that they are not a big club,” he stated.

The coach recalled that after finishing fifth in the Premier League in his first season, the expectation was to strengthen the team. However, instead of attracting players ready for the Premier League, the club ended up signing Dom Solanke and three teenagers, a move that, according to Postecoglou, does not align with the strategy of top clubs. “If we want to move from fifth to challenging for the title, we need players who are ready for the Premier League,” he said.

Postecoglou’s record at Tottenham has been mixed. Although he provided a memorable victory in the Europa League with a 1-0 win over Manchester United in the final, his time in the Premier League has been marked by ups and downs. The team, which started the season promisingly, found itself dropping to 17th place in the table, leaving many fans dissatisfied.

After leaving Tottenham, Postecoglou took on a role in the Premier League with Nottingham Forest, but his stay was brief, ending with a disappointing record of six losses and two draws in just eight matches.

Postecoglou’s statements not only highlight his personal frustrations but also raise questions about the future direction of Tottenham, which continues to struggle to find its identity in an increasingly competitive environment in the Premier League. The big question now is: what can the club do to change its fortunes and become relevant again in the title race?
