My players decided they wanted to be around the ball, to respect the ball and show unity and leadership. That was not a decision I made, but rather that of the leadership group and the team. There is nothing disrespectful in the way they behave during the huddle.”

This practice, which has become a ritual under Rosenior’s direction, had previously sparked controversy, such as when Aston Villa fans booed the Chelsea team before a decisive 4-1 victory at Villa Park. The coach has also accused the Arsenal coaching staff of showing disrespect by encroaching on Chelsea’s half during warm-ups at the Emirates Stadium in January.

“Do you know what’s incredible? Before the game, we had a meeting with the referee.
