The fight for glory in the UEFA is in full swing, and Serie A in Italy, while boasting a promising number of clubs still in competition, faces a monumental challenge in the quest for an extra spot in the UEFA Champions League. With Italy positioned fifth in the UEFA coefficient rankings, the future of Italian football in European competitions seems uncertain, especially when compared to the overwhelming strength of Germany and Spain.
Atalanta, Roma, Bologna, and Fiorentina are flying the Italian flag in European competitions this season. Atalanta is the only Serie A team to have reached the knockout stage of the Champions League, while Bologna, Roma, and Fiorentina secured their places in the knockout rounds of the Europa League and the Conference League, respectively. Today’s draw will determine who their next opponents will be, but the truth is that the pressure is on them.
According to statements from Gazzetta, “theoretically, Italy has limited chances because we can earn fewer points. Just as Poland and Portugal have distanced themselves, the same could happen with our clubs now. Naturally, winning all the matches and all the trophies would change the scenario, but a healthy dose of realism is not harmful to avoid disappointments.” The reality is that Serie A is struggling to maintain its relevance on the European stage as competition intensifies.
Currently, England leads the rankings with an almost insurmountable advantage, while Germany, with 17.571 points, and Spain, with 17.406, are putting pressure on Italy, which stands at 17.357 points. This difference of just 0.20 points between the three countries means that the battle for the second and final spot available for the Champions League is far from decided. However, the numerical advantage of German and Spanish clubs in European competitions is a concerning factor.
While La Liga still has six representatives, including giants like Real Madrid, Atlético de Madrid, and Barcelona, the Bundesliga also stands out with five clubs still in competition, including Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League. This means that both Germany and Spain have more opportunities to accumulate valuable points compared to Italian clubs.
European competitions are a true goldmine in terms of points, with the Champions League offering up to 48 points to a nation, while the Europa League provides 40 and the Europa Conference League, 32. Therefore, the pressure for Italian teams to perform at the highest level is undeniable, as every game is crucial in the fight for an additional place in the elite of European football.
Serie A, with its four teams still in competition, must now join forces and fight tooth and nail to ensure that the Italian flag continues to fly in European competitions. Every match, every goal, and every victory can make a difference in the quest for a brighter future in the Champions League. Time is ticking, and the battle is just beginning.
