Spain thrashes England, and Germany secures a spot in the Women’s World Cup.

The Spanish national team crushed England 4-0 and took a decisive step towards automatic qualification for next year’s Women’s World Cup, in a European round also marked by Germany’s confirmation in the tournament, following a comfortable victory over Norway. With the top teams from each of the four groups securing direct spots, Germany solidified its first place in Group A4 by winning 2-0 at home, achieving an unassailable four-point lead over Norway with just one match remaining.

In the intense clash of Group A3, Spain and England entered tied on 12 points, but the Spaniards proved unstoppable. England’s hopes of securing a World Cup spot with a victory in Mallorca were quickly dashed. Patri Guijarro opened the scoring in the 19th minute, and before halftime, Alexia Putellas doubled the lead to 2-0, leaving Sarina Wiegman’s team in a precarious position. In the second half, Putellas showcased her goal-scoring prowess again with a brace in the 55th minute, and Claudia Pina capped off the rout with a magnificent shot finished after a pass from Aitana Bonmatí, setting the final score at 4-0.

Despite the heavy defeat, England still keeps alive the possibility of direct qualification, but for that, they will need to achieve a better result than Spain in the final round, when they host Ukraine next Tuesday, while the Spaniards visit Iceland.

In Group A2, the excitement prevailed until the last minute. Ireland, thanks to a goal from Amber Barrett in the 90th minute, secured a valuable home victory of 3-2 against the powerful Netherlands team, surpassing the Dutch and moving up to second place, just one point behind leaders France, who defeated Poland 2-0. The decisive clash between Ireland and France will take place in Grenoble, while the Netherlands will host Poland in the final matchday.

This round of European qualifiers has made it clear that the Women’s World Cup is getting closer for some of the football powerhouses, with Spain and Germany standing out with dominant performances, while England and Ireland are still fighting for a spot on the grand stage of women’s football.
