Luciano Spalletti, the man at the helm of Juventus, did not hold back in expressing the growing tension felt by fans during the 2-0 victory over Benfica in the UEFA Champions League. In a detailed analysis of his team’s performance, Spalletti revealed that pressure is always present and that it is crucial to remain constantly alert. “Our radar must always be online,” he stated, emphasizing the need for improvements within the team.
Juventus faced initial difficulties in dismantling Benfica, who, under the guidance of José Mourinho, proved to be a resilient opponent at the Allianz Stadium. However, midfielders Khephren Thuram and Weston McKennie were pivotal, finally finding the path to goal. Luck also smiled on Juve when Benfica’s Vangelis Pavlidis slipped while taking a penalty that could have changed the course of the game.
Spalletti expressed a mix of relief and concern after the match. “Sometimes I fear that we won’t make it, but that’s just me,” he confessed in an interview with Amazon Prime Video Italia, referring to the frustration felt in the stands. “It was an important game; if we don’t bring in results, things get complicated, and the tension increases.” He acknowledged that the team had a good start but that they retreated too much, unnecessarily losing possession, which intensified the pressure.
After the break, Spalletti decided to make a strategic change, introducing Francisco Conceição in place of Fabio Miretti, which resulted in a significant improvement in Juventus’s performance. “At the beginning of the second half, we also had difficulties, but then we started playing our football again. Benfica had chances in the first half, but so did we, with Miretti and McKennie,” he analyzed.
The coach highlighted a critical moment: “If they had converted that penalty at the end, the outcome could have been very tense. We should have avoided that situation, as it is not necessary to go into every tackle.”
Addressing his expectations for the team, Spalletti, who took over Juventus amid a tumultuous season, emphasized the need for a quicker reaction and better game reading. “I expect to see a quicker reaction, a more effective prediction of when the opponents will attack. That ferocity is part of modern football,” he said.
“We lost the ball too many times due to our frantic approach. Benfica tried to attack us, and it’s something we need to get used to if we want to compete at a certain level, although I have seen definitive improvements,” he added.
Jonathan David, who was used as a forward, had a below-par performance, missing a clear goal opportunity. Spalletti commented: “David knows how to play football. He may not have that determination and ferocity, but perhaps he needs a bit more experience to become more decisive. That’s where he needs to improve.”
Finally, with this victory, Juventus now has 12 points and occupies 15th place in the Champions League table, preparing for the decisive match against AS Monaco, where they hope to secure a favorable position in the playoffs. The pressure does not ease, and Spalletti will have to continue working tirelessly to elevate his team to the demanding standards of the competition.
