Sunderland and Burnley had contrasting results in their recent pre-season matches, leaving distinct marks ahead of the new season. While Sunderland managed to overcome Wrexham, the Clarets concluded their pre-season without a victory, losing to Torino.
In the match between Wrexham and Sunderland, held on Sunday, the Premier League team showed superiority, winning 1-0. Coach Regis Le Bris faced challenges as Jocelin Ta Bi was unable to travel to the United States due to visa issues. Wilson Isidor also did not participate, returning to the UK for personal reasons. Sunderland made changes to their squad, with Robin Roefs making his first start of the pre-season, and Noah Sadiki and Habib Diarra joining the team.
Sunderland began to dominate the match and opened the scoring in the 34th minute. Brian Brobbey assisted Nordi Mukiele, who did not hesitate to score after already threatening goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo. Wrexham nearly equalized immediately, but a goal from Nathan Broadhead was ruled out for offside. On the other hand, Burnley suffered a bitter 1-0 defeat against Torino at Turf Moor. Nicky Hayen's team started well, with Zian Flemming wasting a good opportunity early on. However, Torino responded and opened the scoring in the 19th minute when Eybi Njie assisted Ali Dembele, who scored from close range. After falling behind, Burnley struggled to penetrate Torino's organized defense, despite creating some promising chances. A lack of finishing efficiency prevented the team from leveling the score.
These results place Sunderland in a favorable position, bringing confidence for the start of the competition, while Burnley will need to work hard to turn around their misfortune before the new season kicks off. The pressure is mounting on Nicky Hayen to find solutions that can lift the team after a winless preseason.
