In an absolutely electrifying conclusion to the last round of the 2025/26 Premier League, Sunderland completed a dream return to the elite of English football by securing a place in the Europa League with a dramatic victory over Chelsea at the Stadium of Light. The Black Cats, managed by coach Regis Le Bris, defeated the Blues 2-1, a result that not only earned them European qualification but also left Chelsea out of all continental competitions for the next season.

The pressure was immense for Sunderland, who needed not only to win but also to rely on a slip-up from Brighton. The combination of a home victory and Brighton’s defeat to Manchester United propelled the hosts into seventh place, a remarkable achievement for a newly promoted team. The first goal came in the 25th minute when Trai Hume took advantage of an assist from Luke O’Nien to slot the ball past goalkeeper Robert Sánchez. The dominance of the Black Cats was evident for much of the first half, with Chelsea seemingly unable to cope with the pressure.

The second goal, in the 50th minute, was an own goal by Malo Gusto, which culminated in a confusing play following a failed attempt by Brian Brobbey. The explosion of joy at the Stadium of Light was so great that the advertising barriers fell as fans celebrated in ecstasy. Nevertheless, Chelsea pulled one back in the 56th minute with a precise shot from Cole Palmer, ending a 14-match goal drought and briefly reigniting hopes for an equalizer. However, the decisive moment came shortly after, in the 62nd minute, when Wesley Fofana received a red card for accumulation, further complicating matters for the visitors.

In the end, the emotional chants, including a heartfelt rendition of “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” echoed throughout the stadium, symbolizing the magnitude of the achievement by Sunderland, who had not participated in a European competition since 1974. Meanwhile, Chelsea concludes the season in a disappointing tenth place, their worst result since the 2022/23 season.

In post-match statements, Regis Le Bris was beaming: “This May 24 is a perfect day. When we think about last season and now the Europa League, it seems crazy, but it shows the consistency of the club. Working as a team, with unity and focus, allows us to do exceptional things. We have to recover quickly and prepare for the challenges of next season in the Premier League, with the same mentality. The celebration? Probably, yes.”

Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka could not hide his emotion: “I have no words. It’s unbelievable. Week after week, day after day, everyone’s effort at the club has been enormous. I am very grateful. We achieved something that no one believed.”

On Chelsea’s side, interim manager Calum McFarlane acknowledged the ambition: “We wanted to win today, but we didn’t. It’s a tough result to digest, especially because the team did not show the determination needed to secure a spot in Europe.”

This epic clash will forever be marked in Sunderland’s history, as they not only secured their place in the elite but also issued a clear warning to all the giants of English football: the Black Cats are back, and hungry for European glory.
