Thomas Tuchel has assured that he will continue as England's head coach until the end of his contract in 2028, despite the heavy defeat to Argentina in the World Cup semi-finals. The German coach took responsibility for the defensive substitutions that faced strong criticism and ultimately changed the course of the match at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
England came close to reaching their first World Cup final since 1966, with Anthony Gordon putting the Three Lions ahead. However, two late goals from Enzo Fernández in the 85th minute and Lautaro Martínez in stoppage time completed the comeback for the defending champions, leaving the English dream dashed. Tuchel did not hide the impact of the setback but reaffirmed his determination to continue with the project until the 2028 European Championship, which will be held in the United Kingdom. “We continue with the contract until the home Euros. I am looking forward to it, although at this moment it is difficult to look that far ahead,” the coach stated at a press conference.

Tuchel's tactical decisions were heavily criticized, particularly his choice to switch to a five-man defense from the 72nd minute, when he replaced forward Gordon with center-back Ezri Konsa. Subsequently, Dan Burn and Nico O’Reilly also came on to strengthen the defense. “We opted for a five-man defense because there were too many open spaces. Argentina played with more risk and pace, perhaps with nothing to lose, which freed them up and pushed us back. Suddenly, we played with the feeling that we had a lot to lose,” the coach explained. “The responsibility lies with the coach, and if things don’t go well, it’s easy to say it was wrong.”

Harry Kane, the team's captain, expressed his frustration with the adopted defensive strategy. “I’m devastated for my teammates, for the team, for the coaching staff, and for the fans. We played well for most of the time, but after the goal, it felt like we just wanted to hold on, which at this level isn’t enough,” said the forward. Kane acknowledged the increasing pressure from Argentina: “It was wave after wave, we tried to hold on, but in the end, it wasn’t enough.”
The commentators' opinions were unanimous in their criticism of Tuchel. Wayne Rooney accused the coach of losing the players' trust: “Thomas Tuchel's decisions cost us. When a forward sees these defensive changes after the goal, he loses belief.” Alan Shearer emphasized the tactical error: “He put six defenders on the pitch and tried to hold on to the result too early, which did not work against a team with the quality of Argentina.” Michael Owen also expressed his disapproval on social media, highlighting the impact of the coach's choices.
Despite the criticism, Tuchel remains steadfast in his commitment to the England national team, now focusing his gaze on the medium-term future, with the 2028 European Championship as the next major objective of his leadership. The painful defeat in the World Cup leaves scars, but the continuity of the German coach promises to maintain the stability of the project.
