The England national team is experiencing a wave of anticipation as they prepare for a friendly against Uruguay, scheduled for this Friday at Wembley. However, the absence of Trent Alexander-Arnold remains a hot topic of discussion. Thomas Tuchel, the current head coach, revealed the reasons behind the call-up of Ben White over the Liverpool defender, who continues to be a controversial figure in the coach’s selections.

Tuchel defended the inclusion of White, who returns to the national team after a self-imposed exile that began during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The player left the England camp due to personal issues after not being used in the group stage. In March 2024, White also turned down a call-up from coach Gareth Southgate, partly due to a disagreement with assistant Steve Holland. However, now the defender has expressed a desire to represent the Three Lions again.

“First of all, I think everyone deserves a second chance,” Tuchel stated, emphasizing the importance of White’s return. “As soon as I asked Ben if he would be ready to play for me and for England, he immediately said, without hesitation, that he would love to come back and that he was desperate to return.” White’s enthusiasm was evident, with Tuchel describing his reaction as “euphoric, very positive, and emotional,” reflecting the player’s sincerity in wanting to reclaim his place.

Despite the unconditional support from the coach, Tuchel emphasized the need for Ben White to “clear the air” with his teammates who were at the World Cup, acknowledging that it is essential for the success of the group. “I think it’s necessary for him to clear the air with his teammates, and I believe he will do so with the players returning who were with him at the World Cup. He has my support, and I hope he receives the support of the fans, and we will go from there,” he added.

Meanwhile, the decision to leave Trent Alexander-Arnold out of the squad did not go unnoticed. When asked about his choice, Tuchel was straightforward: “He simply has to accept it.” The coach explained that the decision was a sporting one, acknowledging that it may have been difficult and, to some extent, unfair. “The choice fell on White because I saw him play in the final of the English League Cup and in the previous Champions League match, and he was back to his best form. It was an opportunity to get to know him personally,” he clarified.

Tuchel did not fail to recognize Alexander-Arnold’s value but decided to maintain the call-up of players who had excelled in previous camps. “I know what Trent can give us, so the choice was for Ben and Tino Livramento, to keep the boys who had a good camp with us in September, November, and December. Djed Spence as well. I know it causes a stir to leave out a player like Trent. We had a conversation; I tried to explain the situation. He simply has to accept it,” he concluded.

With the clash against Uruguay approaching, the England team faces not only a sporting test but also a challenge of cohesion and resilience among the players. Expectations are high, and fans are eagerly waiting to see how this new dynamic translates on the field.
