UEFA issues strong warning on VAR misuse
The UEFA has issued a strong warning, not only to its referees but to the entire football community, regarding the misuse of VAR, a tool that should be an ally but has generated controversy. Roberto Rosetti, the head of refereeing at UEFA, did not hesitate to reaffirm the true essence of this technology in an official statement: “VAR was created solely to correct clear and obvious errors.” The message is clear: the use of technology must not compromise the competitiveness of modern football.
“While technology is an excellent ally for objective decisions, such as offside calls, we must be cautious with subjective judgments. When we focus on minute details, we end up delaying the game,” Rosetti emphasizes, shedding light on the dilemma that many fans and players face in current matches. The introduction of VAR, which promised to bring fairness to the game, has often been criticized for its excessive interference, resulting in interruptions that disrupt the flow of football.
In addition to technical issues, UEFA is also concerned with player protection and reducing simulation on the field. This new guideline promotes closer collaboration between referees and team captains, an important step towards restoring confidence in the refereeing system and ensuring that the rules are applied fairly and effectively.
The new stance of UEFA underscores the need for a balance between technology and the spirit of the game, where the integrity of competitions must prevail. With increasing pressure from fans and clubs, it will be crucial to observe how this policy unfolds in the upcoming competitions and whether it will truly bring the clarity and fairness that everyone expects.
