The journey of Marcelino as Villarreal’s coach in his 200th match in the Spanish football elite ended in disappointment, with his team suffering a 2-1 defeat against Getafe, who secured three valuable points. This result not only ended a 14-match winless streak against the Azulones (with 5 draws and 9 losses), but also highlighted Villarreal’s struggle to remain relevant in the race for the top of the LaLiga table.
From the opening whistle, Getafe appeared more assertive, although they did not create major opportunities in the early minutes. The first notable chance came from Luis Milla, who, after an individual play, fired the ball just wide of the goal. Milla continued to be a central figure in Getafe’s attack, and it was he who, after a dangerous cross from the left, saw Juan Iglesias brought down in the area by Renato Veiga, resulting in a penalty for the home side just four minutes before halftime. Mauro Arambarri did not hesitate and converted the penalty, marking Getafe’s third goal of the first half this season, and putting the hosts ahead at the break.
With this lead, Getafe had only been ahead at halftime on one other occasion this season (with 14 draws and 8 losses). The second half started in the best possible way for the hosts, who doubled their advantage just eight minutes after the restart. A defensive error by Villarreal allowed Martín Satriano, on loan, to head in a goal, scoring on his debut for the club.
Despite Villarreal managing only one shot on goal, through a header from Tanitoluwa Oluwaseyi that went wide, the team was proving ineffective. Although they were only surpassed in terms of goals by Barcelona and Real Madrid, with 43 goals scored in the league, scoring opportunities were scarce, and time was not on the side of the Yellow Submarine.
However, hope resurfaced when Georges Mikautadze capitalized on a defensive error, bypassed Domingos Duarte, and took a shot that hit the post, but he quickly reacted to score from the rebound. This goal brought new momentum to Villarreal, but with time running out and a series of interruptions, their recovery was hampered. Getafe managed to hold on to the result, ensuring their fourth consecutive game without defeat (with 2 wins and 2 draws), moving up the table and distancing themselves from the relegation zone.
For Villarreal, this defeat marks only their second in seven away games in LaLiga and reflects a trajectory that does not align with expectations. With three wins in eight matches (1 draw and 4 losses), the team finds itself drifting away from the title race, although they still maintain a seven-point gap to fifth place, occupied by Real Betis. The pressure is mounting, and the need to get back on the winning track is becoming increasingly urgent.
