The fight against racism in football is gaining increasing attention, and Vinícius Júnior, the Brazilian star of Real Madrid, is at the forefront of this battle. Recently, the player was subjected to racist insults during the Benfica-Real Madrid match, and his actions are becoming a powerful symbol of resistance and leadership. The statements made by Javier Tebas, president of LaLiga, only underscore the relevance of this issue.
Following the incident at the Estádio da Luz, where Real Madrid won 1-0, Tebas defended Vinícius and emphasized the seriousness of the situation. The player, who has faced around 25 incidents of racism since 2021, according to Globo Esporte, is increasingly becoming a target due to his visibility and his role as an advocate for rights within the sport. “With Vinícius’s case, we realized we were not doing enough. There was a situation that we needed to change. We cannot continue as we are. I believe this work will have to be done in more competitions,” Tebas stated.
The leader of LaLiga highlighted that Vinícius Júnior is not just a victim, but a true leader in the fight against discrimination. “Vinícius receives more racist insults because he has become a leader against racism. He is very clear on this aspect, he has no doubts, he is brave in his expressions, in his attitudes, in his actions, in his fight against racism,” he added.
However, Spanish legislation limits LaLiga’s ability to punish fans or players for racist behavior. Tebas proposes a stricter approach, suggesting that clubs involved in such incidents be penalized with the closure of stands or even with matches behind closed doors. “If there is a racist insult and the perpetrators are not identified, the club should be held responsible. Closing the stands, and in some cases the stadium, is essential. It is necessary to eradicate the figure that insults from the stadium,” he emphasized.
With the second leg of the Champions League play-off taking place tonight at the Bernabéu, the pressure on clubs and institutions to combat racism in sports is increasing. Vinícius Júnior’s fight transcends football; it is a call for change that resonates throughout society. With each insult, with each show of support, he solidifies his position as an icon of resistance and courage. The question now is: what will football authorities do to ensure that this type of behavior does not happen again? The future of the sport depends on it.
