West Ham United is in financial trouble, and the situation is alarming. The London club has confirmed that it will be necessary to sell players this summer, even if the team avoids relegation from the Premier League. This statement comes after the revelation of a colossal loss of £104.2 million in the last financial year, a dramatic contrast to the profit of £57.2 million recorded in the previous season.

According to the figures released, West Ham’s financial situation as of May 31, 2025, is concerning. The club’s turnover has dropped by £42.1 million, totaling £227.6 million, due to disappointing league performance, a reduction in live broadcast games, the absence of European competitions, and a decrease in profits from player sales. The club is already anticipating a cash deficit this summer, even before considering the “severe but plausible” possibility of dropping to the Championship.

Currently, West Ham occupies the 18th position in the Premier League, two points from safety, with 11 matches still to play. The club has made it clear that it will be essential to carry out “more player transactions” during the summer transfer window, and that shareholders will need to provide additional funds. In a report addressed to shareholders, the board stated: “Under both forecasts, both the baseline and the severe, mitigating actions are necessary to ensure sufficient liquidity for the Group to meet its obligations during the period of ongoing concern.”

The club’s management emphasized that the main mitigating action is under its control and involves revenue from player transactions. “If this is not preferred or sufficient, an additional capital injection from shareholders would be necessary,” the report added. The situation is even more serious if relegation occurs, as the group already anticipates an even larger liquidity deficit by the summer of 2026.

In this context, West Ham has only six league wins this season, although it has managed to remain unbeaten in its last three matches. The team’s next challenge will be against Liverpool at Anfield next Saturday, a match that could be decisive for the club’s future.

In January, West Ham strengthened their squad with five new players, including forwards Pablo, Valentin Castellanos, Adama Traoré, and defender Axel Disasi, in an attempt to avoid relegation. The club also assures that it continues to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations and hopes to maintain that compliance in the future. Pressure is high and time is running out for West Ham, which finds itself on the brink of a financial precipice.
