Xabi Alonso, Chelsea's manager, addressed the return of Mykhailo Mudryk following the lifting of his doping suspension, expressing his understanding of the difficulties faced by the player. This week, it was announced that Mudryk has been granted permission to return to competition after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) partially upheld an appeal against his four-year ban.
The Ukrainian forward had not played competitively for almost two years, and Alonso acknowledges that it will be a challenge for Mudryk to regain the necessary rhythm to establish himself in the team. The player expressed his gratitude for being able to return to football, describing this period as “the most difficult” of his career. “We are happy for him, especially knowing that we probably cannot understand what he has been through during this time and how he feels right now,” Alonso stated.
The manager added that the assessment of Mudryk's physical condition is still in its early stages: “It's too early to say how he is in terms of fitness, and the playing time he needs to get back involved.” Alonso expressed his willingness to support Mudryk during this adaptation phase, emphasizing the need for patience. “He has been training alone every day, and I think it must have been really difficult for him because he wanted to play football and be part of a team, and he couldn't do that for so long.”
Mudryk, 25, transferred to Chelsea from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2023 for a fee of around £62 million. With the new season approaching, he will have one last opportunity to prove his worth and fully integrate into the squad. Alonso emphasized the importance of Mudryk feeling part of the team as they wait to see how the situation develops.
