Bryson DeChambeau, the golf prodigy who has been surprising the world with his innovations and bold performances, is once again in the spotlight following an unexpected change in his equipment during the LIV Golf Singapore. The tournament, which began on March 13 at the prestigious Serapong Course of the Sentosa Golf Club, saw DeChambeau not only make a significant alteration to his golf arsenal, but also dominate the competition in the early rounds.
After a surprising split with LA Golf, DeChambeau chose to continue using the brand’s shafts, but decided to switch to Bettinardi wedges, specifically the HLX 5.0 Forged. The decision raised some eyebrows, especially considering his previous performance with the 50-degree Ping S159 wedges and the 56-degree Ping Glide 4.0 wedges.
During his post-round interview, DeChambeau spoke about the new setup of his equipment. “I didn’t get to test it very well this week,” he revealed. “But on hole 11, I hit into the thick grass and got a jumper from the left rough. So, I didn’t really have the opportunity to test the wedges, but they feel good. In practice, they have been working very well and are cutting through the ground more effectively from the fairway.”
DeChambeau continues to be a player who meticulously analyzes every aspect of his game, and that includes his new equipment choice. “I trust it, and I hope that this new bounce I’m using will be beneficial in softer conditions, because that’s really what I’m struggling with. The same goes for my irons; I don’t think I have enough bounce in them, and that’s affecting how they cut through the ground, causing them to spin differently and go varying distances. That might be part of the problem,” he added.
The impact of this change was immediate. On the second day of the LIV Golf Singapore, DeChambeau shot an impressive 6 under par, finishing the round with a total of 10 under par and taking the lead with a solid three-shot advantage over the competitors. Thomas Detry, who maintained consistent form from the previous week, was tied for second place after rounds of 68 and 67, while Louis Oosthuizen, Jon Rahm, Lee Westwood, and Richard T. Lee were also in contention, all at 7 under par.
With a performance that promises to shake up the world of golf, Bryson DeChambeau stands out not only for his skill but also for his ability to reinvent himself in the competitive landscape. Below is the leaderboard for LIV Golf Singapore after the second round:
