Justin Thomas, one of the rising talents in world golf, made a surprising revelation about his debut on the PGA Tour, a moment that, according to him, was marked by an “immature” reaction from Jordan Spieth. The story dates back to 2009, when Thomas, then just 16 years old, made waves with a standout performance at the Wyndham Championship, signing an impressive 65 with no bogeys. However, what truly stuck in Thomas’s memory was Spieth’s response to his achievement.
During an appearance on The Smylie Show, Thomas detailed his experience, vividly recalling the moment he completed his first professional round. “I went to the tournament and ended up missing my first week of classes, which was amazing,” Thomas began. “I remember finishing the first round, I was in the top five, or at least in contention for the top 10. It was a surreal moment.”
The real surprise came when Thomas received a call from Spieth in the locker room. “He called me, which was a little unusual at the time. He asked if I had shot 65 at Wyndham, and after I confirmed, he just hung up. It was a very immature reaction, like a jealous teenager,” Thomas recounted. “I will always remember that because I went home and told my parents and friends that I didn’t think Jordan was very happy for me at that moment.”
The friendly rivalry between the two players is an important part of their story, and this episode illustrates well the competitive dynamic that unites them. Although Spieth does not remember this episode, Thomas has kept the memory as a milestone of his youth and the beginning of a career that promised stardom.
The following year, Spieth had his own debut on the PGA Tour, participating in the Byron Nelson Championship at TPC Las Colinas. He also started strong, with rounds of 68, 69, and 67, but finished in a respectable 16th place, far from the winner, Jason Day. However, his debut was not as flawless as Thomas’s, as it included a bogey, a small blemish on his performance.
These moments not only highlight the pressure and competitiveness of professional golf but also the evolution of the two players from their teenage years to becoming stars on the PGA Tour. While Thomas and Spieth still compete against each other, the echoes of those youthful memories continue to shape their friendship and rivalry in the world of golf.
