In the world of golf, where the sound of the ball striking and safety alerts like the shout of “Fore!” are crucial, the story of Allen John resonates as a symbol of overcoming adversity. The German golfer, who is profoundly deaf and has been using hearing aids since the age of two, defied expectations and shone at the 2026 Joburg Open. Even facing strong winds that challenged his hearing ability, John not only made the cut but also impressed everyone with a remarkable performance.

“Much of my game is based on feel. Even at contact, I don’t receive audio feedback. Especially when it’s windy, the hearing aid acts like a microphone, so I always need to adjust. Overall, I think I’ve found a very good way to manage the feel and not rely so much on hearing,” John stated during the press conference after the tournament.

Born on August 31, 1987, Allen John began playing golf at the age of 10, and since then his journey has been marked by challenges and achievements. With the help of hearing aids, which restored about 85% of his hearing, he has become a regular presence on the national golf scene, representing Germany multiple times since 2003. After a brief hiatus from his professional career, John returned to the circuit in 2018 and made history in his tenth appearance on the DP World Tour.

The event was marked by adverse weather conditions, including rain and thunderstorms that interrupted play, but that did not stop John from shining. He finished the competition with an impressive score of 7 under par, currently holding the 18th position, while many others were still struggling to complete their rounds. What makes John’s performance even more exciting is the fact that during the qualifiers for the tournament, he recorded his first hole-in-one, an achievement he described as “a dream come true after more than 20 years of playing golf.”

“It was my first hole-in-one in over 20 years as a golfer, and I had never gotten one before,” John recalled, reflecting on the significance of this moment in his long career.

Allen John’s journey is not unique. Other golfers, such as Kevin Hall, have also overcome significant challenges to compete at a high level. Hall, who is also deaf, has made seven appearances on the PGA Tour, although he has not made the cut. Billy Mayfair, who faces autism, has had a brilliant career with 761 appearances on the PGA Tour, winning five titles. These examples demonstrate that determination and resilience can break barriers in the world of golf.

Furthermore, golfers like Christine Shin, who is deaf and seeks professional status in the PGA of Australia, as well as one-armed golfers Tommy Morrissey and Alex Fourie, are notable examples that the sport can be an inclusive field where passion and talent overcome physical limitations.

The inspiring story of Allen John at the 2026 Joburg Open is not only a testament to skill but also a powerful reminder that, regardless of adversities, self-belief and dedication to the sport can lead to extraordinary achievements. It is a call for all of us in the world of sports to embrace diversity and perseverance, celebrating those who, like Allen John, continue to challenge the odds and redefine what is possible in golf.
