Notable absences: The three big names missing from the 2026 Genesis Invitational.

The Genesis Invitational is set to make its triumphant return to the iconic Riviera Country Club from February 19 to 22, promising one of the most impressive player fields of the season. Following last year’s unfortunate circumstances that forced a relocation due to wildfires, the tournament is once again the highlight of the PGA Tour in California. Despite featuring an almost full roster of stars, three big names in golf will be absent, leaving fans wondering what might have happened.

With 41 of the top 50 players in the world confirmed to participate, including 18 of the top 20, the Genesis Invitational is an event not to be missed. The format of this tournament, which includes a 36-hole cut, places it on par with other prestigious tournaments like the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Memorial Tournament. However, the absence of some stars has generated significant buzz among golf enthusiasts.

**1. Tiger Woods**

Although he is the host of the event and a name that draws crowds on his own, Tiger Woods will not be present at this year’s competition. The legendary player has not competed since 2025, when he had to withdraw from the Genesis Invitational due to flu-like symptoms. Last year was marked by personal loss, with the passing of his mother, Kultida, which kept him off the circuit. Recently, Woods underwent lumbar disc replacement surgery in October 2025 and continues to struggle with his recovery, preventing him from returning to the greens.

**2. Justin Thomas**

Another notable name that will not be present is Justin Thomas. The golfer is in recovery following a microdiscectomy performed to treat a back injury that had been troubling him. The surgery, successfully conducted in November 2025, was his last attempt to return to form after a disappointing performance at the Procore Championship in September, where he finished in 69th place. Thomas missed important events in early 2026, such as the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, but received the green light to resume training in February and is focusing on a strong comeback during the Florida swing.

**3. Brooks Koepka**

Lastly, Brooks Koepka, who returned to the PGA Tour in January 2026 following his departure from LIV Golf, is also not on the participant list. Despite having the opportunity to re-enter quickly under the Returning Members program, his performance at the Farmers Insurance Open, where he finished tied for 56th place, and the lack of success at the WM Phoenix Open, where he failed to make the cut, have left fans questioning his form. Although he is confirmed for other tournaments in the future, such as the Cognizant Classic and the Players Championship, his absence from the Genesis Invitational is notable.

The defending champion, Ludvig Aberg, is preparing to face an even fiercer competition than he overcame last year in San Diego. Despite the absences of Woods, Thomas, and Koepka, the Riviera Country Club is set to host one of the most competitive showdowns of the season, ensuring that the spectacle of golf continues. Sports fans should stay tuned, as this tournament promises high emotions and the opportunity to see the best in the world in action, even in the absence of some of its biggest stars.
