Rory McIlroy delivered an impressive performance at the Genesis Invitational, signing for a 66 under par, his best start at the Riviera Country Club. Despite adverse weather conditions, including torrential rain and strong winds that interrupted play for nearly three hours, the Northern Irish golfer showcased a performance worthy of applause. At the end of the first day, he was tied for the clubhouse lead, a remarkable achievement that puts him one step closer to reaching a historic milestone on the PGA Tour.
“It’s the easiest way to do it,” McIlroy said as he climbed the 52 steps leading from the 18th green to the clubhouse, clearly pleased with his performance. The tournament’s start was marked by an impressive streak of three birdies in the first four holes, demonstrating his ability to adapt and thrive in challenging conditions. With the rain and cold turning the day into a true test of endurance, McIlroy managed to control his game, a feat he acknowledges he has not mastered in the past, despite coming from a harsh climate in Ireland.
“I’ve started to really enjoy this style of golf. If you had asked me ten years ago, I would have said I didn’t like these conditions, but there’s been a shift in my mindset,” McIlroy explained. “Now, when I face conditions like this, I’m much more prepared. I wouldn’t say I enjoy them, but I can certainly handle them better.”
After the break, he faced strong winds under a blue sky and did not hesitate to express his preference: “The rain was easier.” He also stood out with an impressive recovery to par at the 12th hole and, despite a bogey at the 16th, quickly responded with a birdie at the 17th. With a 66, McIlroy achieved the best start of his career at Riviera, a course that, despite his appreciation, has not brought him much success in the past – only three top 10 finishes and the third highest number of wins on the PGA Tour without a triumph at the Genesis Invitational in the last 30 years.
If McIlroy secures the victory this week, he will become the first player since Phil Mickelson, 19 years ago, to reach 30 wins on the PGA Tour, a feat that only five golfers have achieved since Jack Nicklaus in 1969. Although it does not compare to the career Grand Slam club, which he entered last year with his Masters victory, this achievement would also place him in a very select group.
Thus, anticipation builds as McIlroy continues his quest for another significant achievement in his career, leaving fans and golf experts eager for what comes next in this iconic tournament.
