Alcaraz responds to the question about Sinner-Fonseca: “Why should I be concerned?”

Carlos Alcaraz continues to shine on the tennis courts, accumulating consecutive victories that now reach 15 this season. Since his triumph at the Australian Open, through Doha and now Indian Wells, the young Spanish prodigy shows no signs of stopping. With the aim of consolidating his lead in the ATP world ranking, Alcaraz maintains a clear advantage over his rivals, especially the Italian Jannik Sinner. During his journey in California, the challenges have been minimal; in his round of 16 match, the Norwegian Casper Ruud was unable to put up a fight, losing 6-1, 7-6. The Spaniard’s performance was so impressive that he was rated a 9.7, a score he hasn’t seen since 2023.

In a press conference, Alcaraz not only analyzed his last match but also looked ahead to his next challenge against the British Cameron Norrie, who awaits him in the quarter-finals.

“First of all, I am very satisfied with my performance. I believe I played tennis at a very high level in both sets. I am happy because I achieved the goals I set for myself at the beginning of the tournament, and I hope to play at this level or even better in the next match. It will be a very tough game against Cam; I have always fought against him. I lost the last one, so I really want my revenge. We’ll see how things go; I am looking forward to getting on court,” said Alcaraz, with the confidence that characterizes him.

The challenge against Norrie will not be easy. The British player has been a tricky opponent, having won three of the last five encounters, including a victory in Paris-Bercy in 2025. “To say that it is always difficult to play against left-handers is an understatement. The way they vary the height of the ball is fantastic. He has a very flat backhand and a forehand with a lot of spin, which can make you lose the direction of the ball. He is a gladiator, a formidable fighter who battles for every point, every game, every set. Facing someone who never gives up is always complicated,” commented Alcaraz about his next opponent.

Journalists at the conference questioned Alcaraz about the recent match between Jannik Sinner and Joao Fonseca, and whether he is concerned about the rise of new talents in tennis. “No, no, why should I be worried? I watched the match for a while. I couldn’t see everything, but I noticed that Joao is playing at a very high level. When someone can face Jannik and take the score to 7-6, 7-6, it’s clear that they had a sensational performance. I’m happy to see Joao grow like this, facing these kinds of challenges. As a tennis player and as a person, I love to see players like him developing. He is very young, and I know he will learn from this experience. I’m pleased with where he is now, and I’m sure we will see much more from him in the future,” said Alcaraz, showing his admiration for the emerging talent.

During the match, one moment that surprised everyone was a backhand lob without a bounce that Alcaraz executed with mastery. “I don’t know, because it’s not something I usually practice. I felt I could do it. It wasn’t a big challenge for me, and at the same time, it seemed like the easiest shot I could make with that type of ball. Why not try it, if it comes naturally to me and I can do it easily?” reflected the young tennis player, showcasing his boldness and creativity on the court.

With confidence high and determination to continue winning, Alcaraz is undoubtedly a force to be reckoned with in the world of tennis and an athlete to watch closely in upcoming competitions.
