The young Filipino tennis player, Alex Eala, is living a true fairytale in the world of tennis, and she does not hesitate to highlight a moment she considers the “pinnacle of her career so far.” The athlete, who has won the hearts of fans and critics alike, revealed that her impressive run at last year’s Miami Open catapulted her to fame, transforming her from a relatively unknown player into a rising star on the WTA circuit.
At the beginning of her journey, just a year ago, Eala was ranked 140th in the WTA rankings, primarily competing in Challenger Tour tournaments and on the ITF circuit. Lacking the necessary ranking to enter WTA 1000 events directly, the 19-year-old received a wildcard to participate in the Miami Open, where she made history by reaching the semifinals, defeating renowned opponents such as 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, current Australian Open champion Madison Keys, and then-world number 2 Iga Swiatek, a true legend with five Grand Slam titles.
“I think everything that happened after Miami was a new experience for me, being in the top 100 for the first time. My eyes were wide open, I was so eager to compete and be at this level,” Eala stated during an appearance on the podcast The Sit-Down. “In the end, being in the WTA is my dream. To be a professional tennis player and I am living that dream. The run in Miami has to be the highlight of my career so far. That’s what put me on the map. Everything fell into place after that. I look back at that moment and I can only think, wow, it was insane. It’s crazy to believe that actually happened.”
This achievement was not a full stop, but rather the beginning of a brilliant journey. Eala made her Grand Slam debut at the French Open, reached her first WTA final in Eastbourne, and became the first Filipina to win a main draw match by advancing to the second round of the US Open. Her successful path continued with her first title on the Challenger Tour by participating in the Guadalajara 125 Open, and with that, she broke into the top 50 of the rankings.
Currently, Eala has reached her career-high ranking, sitting at 31st place after a remarkable performance in the quarter-finals in Dubai. The 20-year-old has quickly become one of the most admired players on the WTA circuit, drawing crowds whenever she steps on the court, especially with the warm support of Filipino fans, both at the Australian Open and in Dubai.
“It’s so good to know that I’m doing what I can for the sport because tennis has given me so much,” said Eala, reflecting on the impact she is having on the sport. “It’s a great time for women’s tennis in our region, so I’m happy to be a part of it.”
With a career full of achievements and a bright future ahead, Alex Eala promises to continue surprising the tennis world and inspiring many with her determination and undeniable talent.
