Alexander Bublik ignites the tennis world once again with controversial statements and explosive behavior on court. The current world number 10 starred in an episode that is already generating significant buzz after defeating Arthur Rinderknech in the quarter-finals of the Geneva Open, in a match marked not only by the quality of play but also by offensive words directed at his opponent and an explosive celebration that left spectators stunned.
During the opening set, with the score tied at two games, Bublik did not hesitate to launch a harsh and provocative criticism at the Frenchman Rinderknech, questioning his “masculinity” and using a clearly derogatory tone: “He is French. And if he is French, he is basically a girl who can give up at any moment. There is nothing masculine about him – just look at him.” The statement was made in Russian, so neither the chair umpire nor Rinderknech himself understood the insult at the time, but the message quickly spread on social media, causing a wave of outrage.
After securing victory with a score of 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, Bublik could not contain his anger and, in a gesture that shocked the audience, threw the ball forcefully into the crowd, expressing all his frustration and aggression. This win allowed the Kazakhstani tennis player to improve his clay court record to an impressive 17 wins and only 5 losses since the last Roland Garros. With an inconsistent run in the clay court season, where he only reached the quarter-finals in Monte Carlo and suffered early exits in other tournaments, Bublik now wants to seize this opportunity to claim his second title of the year and make a strong entrance into Roland Garros.
Bublik’s next opponent will be Learner Tien, a name that promises a fierce confrontation, as Tien was responsible for eliminating Bublik at the Rome Masters, in a match that went down to the last point (4-6, 6-3, 7-5). This clash in the semi-finals in Geneva will undoubtedly be one of the most tense moments of the tournament.
This episode is not a new occurrence in Bublik’s behavior, who has a history of controversies on the court. Just over a year ago, during the 2023 US Open, the player was caught making a derogatory comment in Russian about Dominic Thiem, drawing severe criticism from the tennis community. In 2025, he also had a public altercation with Corentin Moutet at a tournament in Arizona, highlighting his tendency for verbal confrontations in high-pressure moments.
More recently, in Rotterdam, Bublik made headlines not for his game but for protests against his opponent Hubert Hurkacz. After a hard-fought victory by 6-7, 7-6, 7-5, the tennis player did not hold back in criticizing the Polish player’s style of play, even mentioning Novak Djokovic in a sarcastic statement: “Ace, ace, double fault, double fault, double fault, ace, ace, double fault, ace, ace, double fault, ace, ace, double fault. What the hell is this? And they tell me I don’t have rhythm. Next to him, I’m Djokovic, for heaven’s sake!” The agitation continued with further criticisms during the second set, fueling the controversy even more.
Although Hurkacz remained silent in the face of provocations, the audience present showed visible discomfort with Bublik’s attitude, who seems to lose control whenever he faces verbally challenging opponents. This explosive facet of the player continues to be one of his trademarks, fueling both fascination and controversy surrounding his figure.
With the approach of Roland Garros, Bublik will need to control his aggression to avoid penalties and to transform his talent into tangible results. His time in Geneva promises to be a decisive test, not only for his abilities on the court but also for his emotional maturity in a high-pressure scenario. What is certain is that Alexander Bublik remains one of the most unpredictable and controversial players on the circuit, capable of dominating the game or igniting social media with a single word.
