The South American journey of Matteo Berrettini ended disastrously, leaving tennis fans stunned. In the ATP 250 tournament in Santiago, the Italian player was eliminated in the first round after losing to young American Emilio Nava with a score of 3-6, 4-6. From the outset, Berrettini struggled to find his rhythm, appearing unmotivated both mentally and physically, which was reflected in his on-court performance.
The match started alarmingly for Berrettini, who suffered an early break after an excellent cross-court forehand from Nava. Trailing 1-3, the Italian had a chance to break back but missed, hitting a forehand error. Although Nava showed some hesitation when serving for the set, he displayed courage by recovering from a tough situation, turning around a 15-40 deficit and securing the first set.
In the second set, Berrettini seemed to find a bit more consistency, holding serve until 3-3. However, the tide turned when Nava capitalized on a crucial error from the Italian, who committed a double fault while attempting a forehand. From there, the American continued to follow his game plan, consolidating his victory with a solid performance.
Meanwhile, in Dubai, other tennis players showed impressive performances. Andrey Rublev had a smooth start, defeating Valentin Royer with a clear 6-3, 6-4, thus advancing to the round of 16, where he will meet Ugo Humbert, who caused a surprise by eliminating the defending champion, Stefanos Tsitsipas. The young Jakub Mensik also shone by defeating Hubert Hurkacz in a match that promised to be complicated, triumphing 6-4, 7-6(7). In his next challenge, Mensik will face Alexei Popyrin, who won against Kamil Majchrzak in an exciting comeback, with a final score of 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Berrettini, one of the most recognized names on the circuit, left Santiago with a bitter taste, and his fans hope he can quickly regain his form. After all, tennis is a sport of ups and downs, and the next competition may bring a new opportunity to shine.
