In recent years, the rivalry between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner has sparked heated debates in the tennis world, leading many to question whether these young talents have taken the sport to a new level. Now, an experienced voice from the era dominated by the legendary ‘Big 3’ — Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic — has entered the discussion, offering an intriguing perspective on the comparison between these generations.

Alcaraz and Sinner, who have collectively won the last nine Grand Slam titles, are clearly marking a new era in tennis, challenging the dominance of Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic, who together boast an impressive 66 Grand Slam titles. The meteoric rise of these two young players has garnered admiration from sports icons such as John McEnroe and Mats Wilander, who have boldly claimed that the current level of play may surpass what the three giants demonstrated throughout their careers.

Ivan Ljubicic, a former world number 3 and direct competitor of Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic, has a unique perspective on this comparison. Having faced all three on multiple occasions and even defeating them, Ljubicic was also instrumental in Federer’s successful career, helping him refine his backhand following an injury recovery in 2017. In a recent episode of the podcast “Off Court with Greg Rusedski,” Ljubicic shared his thoughts on the current playing style.

“I tell what’s better. I mean, you know, do we talk about the speed of the ball? Yes, they’re hitting harder, you know,” said Ljubicic, emphasizing the evolution of intensity and power in modern play. He recalled how, from 2005 to 2008, players were extremely precise and patient in their shots. “They were so precise with shot selection. They were building up points. It was just different. That’s why it’s impossible to compare eras,” he added.

The transition to a more physical and faster style of tennis is notable, but Ljubicic points out that this makes comparisons between eras a complex task. “It is definitely more physical now. It’s faster in a way, but depending on what you like. I like more tennis,” he stated, acknowledging the fascination with the sport’s progress and its increasing athleticism.

He also questioned the validity of simple rankings between generations. “Roger [Federer] was playing better than [John] McEnroe. Yes, I guess, but you know, what’s better? You know, how do you compare?” In this regard, he suggests that perhaps only artificial intelligence will one day be able to provide a formula for these complex comparisons.

Although Alcaraz and Sinner are just at the beginning of their brilliant careers, they are already being considered among the greats of the sport. However, for them to truly challenge the longevity and records of the ‘Big 3’, they will need to dominate the circuit for a decade or more.

With the future of tennis at stake, the rivalry between Alcaraz and Sinner promises to bring new emotions and challenges, while the legacy of Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic remains an unmatched reference in the sport. Following the journey of these young talents will undoubtedly be a must-see spectacle for all tennis enthusiasts.
