Carlos Alcaraz, the Spanish tennis prodigy, saw his impressive winning streak this year come to an abrupt end at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, where Daniil Medvedev prevailed with a score of 6-3, 7-6(3). The defeat not only marked the end of his remarkable series of 16 consecutive victories, but it also represented Alcaraz’s first setback of the year in an exhilarating Masters 1000 semifinal. After an intense 97-minute battle, the 22-year-old did not hesitate to acknowledge Medvedev’s superiority on court.
In the post-match press conference, Alcaraz offered strong praise for his opponent’s performance. When asked what made the difference in the match, the player made no effort to hide his admiration for the Russian’s talent. “First of all, I have to give credit to Daniil. He played an incredible match. From the beginning to the end, he was surreal, to be honest. I’ve never seen him play like that,” Alcaraz stated, clearly impressed.
The Spaniard continued to show respect for his opponent and accepted the defeat with admirable honesty. “He completely deserves the victory today. He deserves to move forward and play a final here. I can only congratulate him,” he said, highlighting the importance of sportsmanship in sports.
Alcaraz did not shy away from reflecting on his own performance, admitting that he made crucial mistakes that left him under pressure. “From my side, I played some games, especially in the first set, where I let my serve slip away, and part of that meant I was always chasing after him. It was difficult for me, but I am proud to have fought until the last ball,” he explained.
Alcaraz’s defeat was not just a matter of errors, but also a testament to the impressive form Medvedev has shown in recent weeks. The former world number one entered the court with a formidable streak of 18 consecutive sets won, which started during his victorious campaign in Dubai. Under the scorching sun of the Californian desert, Medvedev dominated the rallies, forcing Alcaraz to chase after every ball and expend unnecessary energy on each point.
Medvedev made the first decisive move in the opening set, breaking serve to go up 3-1, which proved crucial in securing victory in the first set. The second set was a tight battle, with Alcaraz managing to break first and lead 3-1, but Medvedev quickly responded, breaking back and staying in the fight.
Alcaraz had a real opportunity to force a third set; however, at the critical moment of 4-5 on Medvedev’s serve, he created two set points but failed to convert them. Medvedev saved the first with a powerful forehand and the second with a service winner, taking the set to a tie-break, where he took full control, finishing with a powerful ace down the middle.
Even in defeat, Alcaraz tried to see the bigger picture. “I’m a bit disappointed right now. But at the same time, I have to see the good things in this loss. It’s about the people and the players who think they need to play at this level if they want to beat me. So, at some point, that’s going to end up benefiting me in some way,” he reflected, showing a resilient mindset.
With this victory, Medvedev advances to the final of Indian Wells, where he prepares to face Jannik Sinner, in a battle for a major title that promises to be thrilling. Medvedev revealed that the victory held special significance, as it was a rematch after Alcaraz had defeated him in the finals of Indian Wells in 2023 and 2024. “Playing against someone like Carlos is always a tough challenge. He is an incredible player with amazing shots, defense, attack, return, everything. So, you need to be at your best,” said Medvedev, acknowledging the difficulty of competing against the Spanish talent.
This will be Medvedev’s third final of the 2026 season, having already won two titles this year at the ATP 250 in Brisbane and the ATP 500 in Dubai. He is now preparing for a major showdown against Sinner, who leads their rivalry with a record of 8-7. Sunday’s match will mark the first encounter between the two since 2024, with both players having not dropped a single set during the tournament.
Medvedev believes that his chances in the final will depend on maintaining the level he has shown throughout the week. “If I can keep the level I had during the tournament and maybe even raise it, I will have my chances,” he concluded, gearing up for a clash that promises to be electrifying.
