Carlos Alcaraz, the Spanish tennis prodigy, recently made a touching revelation that is sure to resonate with sports fans. As he prepares for the prestigious competition in Indian Wells, Alcaraz opened his heart about the absence of his former coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, in his players’ box. The lack of his mentor, who guided him through one of the brightest phases of his career, does not go unnoticed.
The partnership between Alcaraz and Ferrero is considered one of the most fruitful in the history of the ATP Tour. For over seven years, Ferrero not only coached the 22-year-old but also helped him secure no less than six Grand Slam titles, eight ATP Masters 1000 trophies, and the coveted position of world number one. However, after the 2025 season, both decided to go their separate ways, leaving many to question how Alcaraz will adapt without his presence.
In an interview with Eurosport, Alcaraz did not hesitate to express his feelings, stating: “I would say it is what it is. Obviously, I wouldn’t say it’s a new team. The members are practically the same; we just restructured a bit. We are all together, just missing one. Every time I return to a tournament I played last year, I feel it’s a little different. You can feel that, but we try to feel as comfortable as possible both on and off the court.”
Since parting ways with Ferrero, Alcaraz has continued to work with coach Samuel Lopez and his brother Álvaro, but the shadow of his mentor’s absence still looms over him.
On the other hand, Juan Carlos Ferrero, in recent statements, revealed his desire to meet with Alcaraz and “normalize everything.” During a conversation on the show El Cafelito, Ferrero expressed his longing to reunite with the young talent, saying: “I wrote to him again after Australia and also later, in Doha. I have no problem with that; in fact, I’m looking forward to seeing him to give him a hug, normalize everything that happened, and maybe play golf if possible. I think we still have a pending conversation; I would like to reminisce about everything we went through together. Having a quiet coffee and giving a hug, I would love that. We have that pending, and it will happen.”
Despite the separation, Alcaraz continues to shine on the courts. His start to the 2026 season has been spectacular, with victories at the Australian Open and the Qatar Open. Now, the seven-time Major winner is ready to begin his campaign at Indian Wells, where he will face the experienced Grigor Dimitrov. Alcaraz is determined to show that, even without Ferrero by his side, he is still a force to be reckoned with in the world of tennis.
