Carlos Alcaraz, the Spanish tennis prodigy, is back in action this week at the ATP 500 in Doha, where his compatriot Jannik Sinner is also competing, following his victory at the prestigious Career Grand Slam in Australia. The young talent, who chose not to participate in Rotterdam to recover after his win in Melbourne, is eager to prove his worth on the court.
“It’s wonderful to return to the court,” Alcaraz stated. “I trained well and, of course, what I achieved in Australia was incredible; I still reflect on it. But tennis is about moving forward, tournament after tournament. Every competition is crucial, special, and I want to give my 100%.”
Alcaraz will make his debut in Doha against Arthur Rinderknech, an opponent he considers quite challenging. “He is a very tough player. I have played against him several times, and each match is always complicated. I am looking forward to my first match here this year. I know how difficult each match will be. This draw is quite demanding for an ATP 500. Just look at the early rounds and the big clashes right from the start. I just intend to focus on each game and see how far I can go.”
When asked about the possibility of a new final against Jannik Sinner, with whom he had several exciting encounters last year, Alcaraz sidestepped the question, opting for a more strategic approach. “We think about each match; my team and I set some objectives for this tournament. We are not talking about results. The focus is on continuing to evolve and improve. Although I have had a lot of success so far, winning the most important tournaments in the world, I still see some weaknesses in my game. Many players are trying to catch up with me: they study my playing style, analyze my tactics, and try to beat me. So, I need to be prepared for that.”
Alcaraz’s determination to maintain his evolution and his humility in recognizing his weaknesses reflect not only his maturity as an athlete, but also his ability to handle the pressure of being one of the rising stars on the circuit. With Sinner in sight and a challenging tournament ahead, tennis fans will surely have plenty to watch in the coming weeks.
