Daniil Medvedev, the Russian tennis prodigy, did not hold back in criticizing the court conditions in Miami, challenging the long-held belief that Florida’s courts are faster compared to Indian Wells. After a hard-fought three-set victory against Japanese player Rei Sakamoto, Medvedev expressed an unusual frustration for an athlete of his stature, stating that this year, the conditions in Miami are surprisingly slower. “The conditions are completely different, and they always have been. In recent years, I always felt that the Miami courts were a bit faster, but this year, they are slower than Indian Wells, which was sped up,” the Russian lamented.
In an interview with Tennis TV, Medvedev elaborated on how the court’s slowness affected his performance. “I didn’t notice much difference with my serve; I was able to exploit that shot well. However, at other moments in the match, everything was slower, and because of that, I lost a bit of rhythm and made some errors,” he acknowledged, with a tone of frustration that revealed how uncomfortable he was with the change.
The adaptation was a challenge, especially with only a few days of preparation. “We know how the first rounds are, always full of traps. Today I wasn’t prepared for the ball’s reaction, although I improved as the match progressed,” said Medvedev, who expressed optimism about his performance in the latter part of the match. “I probably ended up wearing my opponent down a bit, considering he is only in his second or third ATP match. I’m satisfied with my performance, especially in the final phase. I reiterate, the transition from Indian Wells to Miami is never easy. The most important thing was to win, and I managed to do that.”
With the competition in Miami providing a landscape full of surprises and upsets of seeded players, Medvedev has the opportunity to solidify his position in the ATP top 10. A performance similar to what he displayed in Indian Wells could catapult him even further up the rankings, although the Russian has warned about the traps the tournament can present. He knows that to ensure his place among the best, he will need to quickly find his rhythm and adapt to the challenging environment of Miami. Expectations are high, and fans are eagerly waiting to see how Medvedev will perform in the upcoming rounds.
