Daniil Medvedev, the former world number one, did not hesitate to express his frustration after losing to Jannik Sinner in the final of the 2026 Indian Wells Open. The match, which was a true spectacle of high quality, ended with Sinner coming out on top by 7-6(6), 7-6(4), leaving Medvedev lamenting the lack of break opportunities during the contest.
Medvedev, who reached the final with an impressive streak of nine consecutive victories, found himself unable to create any break points on Sinner’s serve in a match decided by extremely narrow margins. He was two points away from winning the first set, but luck was not on his side, and in the second set tiebreak, he led 4-0 before watching Sinner win seven consecutive points to claim victory.
In a candid statement on Twitter, Medvedev congratulated Sinner and his team, writing: “Today wasn’t good enough. Congratulations to @janniksin and his team. Overall, it was a very good tournament. Thank you @BNPPARIBASOPEN for the support. See you next year.” This message reflects not only his disappointment at the defeat but also an acknowledgment of the excellent tournament he played.
The 30-year-old tennis player, who had defeated world number one Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals with an impressive 6-3, 7-6(3), saw his good form rewarded. Entering the tournament ranked 11th, his performance in Indian Wells allowed him to return to the top 10 of the ATP rankings. In a press conference, Medvedev commented on this rise: “It’s a good feeling, but I’ve always said that when I play well, I will get back to the top 10. I played well.”
He acknowledged that, despite the difficulties he faced during the season, where at times he struggled to earn points, his current level of play could lead him to aspire to the top 5 of the rankings if he maintains his performance. “If I can continue this level, I will be, at some point, in the top 10, maybe in the top 5, but if I lose this level, then the rankings can vary. Does it mean something special to me? No. But it’s a good feeling at the same time. So, yes, I can’t answer any better.”
Thus, Daniil Medvedev leaves Indian Wells with a mix of disappointment and hope, an athlete who, even after a loss, demonstrates his determination to fight for the top again. The future promises more challenges, but Medvedev has already proven to be a resilient competitor.
