In the wake of an impressive performance at the Indian Wells tournament, Daniil Medvedev cast a penetrating look at his ability to consistently compete with the young titans of tennis, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. The Russian player, who was once world number one, had a remarkable run at the Masters 1000, where he eliminated the Spanish Alcaraz, the top-ranked player, with a commanding 6-3, 7-6(3), putting an end to a stunning 16-match winning streak for the Iberian athlete.
Although Medvedev reached the final, his quest for a title at Indian Wells was halted by Sinner, who defeated him in a thrilling match, finishing with a score of 6-7(6), 6-7(4). This result not only ended Medvedev’s streak of nine consecutive victories but also his run of 18 sets won, which began with his triumph at the Dubai Championships last month.
Medvedev, who started the tournament ranked 11th in the ATP rankings, moved up to 10th place after the event. He was aiming to become the first player since Novak Djokovic to defeat both Alcaraz and Sinner in the same tournament, a task that, as he himself acknowledged, is extremely challenging.
During the press conference after the final, Medvedev was asked if he sees himself as the biggest rival to Sinner and Alcaraz. The Russian was straightforward: “It’s hard to say because I’ve lost many matches against them, and again today against Jannik.” Despite acknowledging his difficulties, Medvedev expressed confidence in his potential: “Whoever is on the other side of the net, maybe Carlos and Jannik, maybe someone else, I will try to play good tennis, which I’ve proven I can do here, in Dubai, Brisbane.”
He added that in a singles match, many players can challenge the two young prodigies: “We have been seeing several surprises; Jakub beat Jannik in Doha, and I beat Carlos here. So, in a match, many can challenge them. It’s not correct to say it’s just me or just Novak or Sascha [Zverev].”
Medvedev concluded his analysis with a remark about the consistency needed to compete at the highest level, especially at the end of the season when the best players rack up impressive win records. “It’s not easy, and you just need to do your best,” he emphasized.
With Medvedev determined to raise his level and compete with the best, the landscape of men’s tennis promises to be even more exciting in the coming months. The rivalry among these players is just beginning, and fans are certainly looking forward to the upcoming matchups.
