David Nalbandian sounds the alarm and bets everything on prodigy João Fonseca: “In two years, he will dominate the circuit!”

In the world of tennis, the name João Fonseca is gaining more and more prominence, and this time, the endorsement comes from a living legend of the sport. David Nalbandian, the former Argentine tennis player who reached third place in the world rankings, has no doubts: the young Brazilian is a promise that will shake the foundations of world tennis in the coming years.

Nalbandian, who is currently coaching Grigor Dimitrov, did not hesitate to praise Fonseca, highlighting his potential to break into the top tier of international tennis. “I have seen him play a few times on television. He is an excellent player, very young, with enormous potential. I hope he achieves great accomplishments,” said the Argentine, sending a clear signal for the future of South American tennis.

What makes this recognition even more impactful is the context of tennis in South America, which has long been without a prominent figure like Juan Martín Del Potro, the last great name from the region. Nalbandian reinforces this idea: “He is not just a hope for João Fonseca, but for Brazilian tennis and for all South American tennis, which has not had a standout representative on the circuit for a long time. I believe that, in a couple of years, he will be capable of competing with the best in the world.”

João Fonseca responds: “Physically, I am much better than at the beginning of the season.”

As the clay court season approaches, the young Brazilian prodigy spoke with Sky Sport about his current physical condition and expectations for the upcoming tournaments. After a start to the year marked by physical issues that limited him, especially in Australia, Fonseca shows confidence and ambition.

“Physically, I feel much better compared to the beginning of the season. I couldn’t play my best in Australia because my back and an injury restricted me quite a bit,” explained the 19-year-old tennis player. “I really enjoy playing on clay. It’s a surface that requires being in excellent shape to face the challenges it presents. The points are longer, and a lot of endurance and patience are necessary.”

Fonseca also analyzed the strategic differences between clay and hard courts, emphasizing the importance of technical adaptation: “When transitioning from hard to clay, it’s necessary to adjust the trajectories of the ball, hitting them a bit higher. On clay, it’s easier to respond to the opponent’s serve, and patience is key. Sometimes, a shot that seems like a winner on hard can be returned with a high ball on clay. You need to be aggressive, but knowing that a big shot is not always enough to finish the point.”

The young Brazilian talent, who is already being pointed out as one of the biggest prospects in world tennis, has everything to transform his career into a resounding success and put South America back on the map of elite tennis.

With the blessing of David Nalbandian and his visible determination, João Fonseca is preparing to be the new star that will challenge the giants of world tennis. Stay tuned: the future of tennis may have a new face and his name is João Fonseca!
