Novak Djokovic once again defied all expectations and survived a true test of endurance in his debut at Wimbledon, securing a hard-fought victory against the unknown Chinese player Wu Yibing. The Serbian, a seven-time champion on the sacred London grass and the all-time record holder for Grand Slam titles, was far from dazzling, but he ensured his passage to the second round — a result that, despite the scare, keeps alive the dream of yet another trophy at the All England Club.

The match, held this Monday, saw Djokovic, the current seventh seed and at 39 years old one of the most experienced players in the tournament, face off against the Chinese player Wu Yibing, ranked just 102nd in the ATP. It took three hours and twelve minutes for the Serbian champion to resolve the contest, with set scores of 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, and 6-4. Wu, who had never advanced past the first round in a Grand Slam tournament, put up a tough fight and forced Djokovic to dig deep, particularly in the second set, where the Asian player even managed to level the match and cast doubts on the veteran’s physical condition.

This victory is anything but trivial for Djokovic, who is looking to regain ground in a season marked by some fluctuations and doubts about his ability to maintain dominance on the court. Wimbledon has always been one of the Serbian’s favorite venues, but his performance against Wu Yibing left many questioning whether he is at the necessary level to defeat higher-caliber opponents. With the next opponent already determined — the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, former world number three and currently ranked 87th in the ATP — the path to the final looks perilous and full of surprises.

At the end of the match, Djokovic did not hide his relief: “It was a very difficult match. Wu played incredibly, especially in the second set. I felt I had to raise my level to win,” the Serbian confessed in the press room. The tennis player also added: “The grass at Wimbledon always demands the best from us. I’m happy to have made it through, but I know I need to improve a lot if I want to go far this year.” These statements, made right after the victory, reveal Djokovic’s awareness that his tennis is still far from the ideal level.

Wu Yibing, for his part, expressed pride despite the defeat: “I faced one of the greatest of all time and managed to play on equal terms at many moments. I will take away great lessons from this experience,” the Chinese player stated, visibly emotional after his elimination. Djokovic, with the experience of someone who has won everything, responded with humility: “He has a great future ahead of him if he continues with this attitude.”

The analysis of what follows is inevitable: Djokovic will face a much more experienced and dangerous opponent, with credentials established on major stages, even though Tsitsipas is far from his best ranking. The Greek, who defeated Frenchman Hugo Gaston in three sets in the opening round, has already proven capable of surprising favorites and will certainly look to exploit the weaknesses Djokovic displayed in this opening match. The Serbian cannot afford to repeat the mistakes made against Wu Yibing, lest he see the dream of another title at Wimbledon crumble prematurely.

The stage is set for a high-stakes duel in the second round, where every point could be decisive. Tennis fans around the world are on edge: will Novak Djokovic be able to find his best tennis in time to ward off the specter of an early exit? One thing is certain: if he continues to struggle as he did in this debut, defending his title at Wimbledon will be anything but a stroll for the Serbian champion.
