Elena Rybakina rejects coach during match while Jessica Pegula shines in Miami.

Elena Rybakina, a dominant force in women’s tennis, showcased incredible resilience by securing a spot in the semi-finals of the Miami Open with a remarkable comeback against Jessica Pegula. After losing the first set 2-6, she rallied to win 6-3, 6-4, marking her third appearance in the semi-finals of this prestigious tournament and reinforcing her excellent season. As she prepares for a decisive clash with Aryna Sabalenka, the match was also highlighted by a tense moment with her coach, Stefano Vukov.

Tension escalated in the first set when Pegula led 5-2. At this critical moment, Vukov could be heard from the stands giving loud instructions. “Elena, play ‘mining tennis’. It works. Show character. Hit the ball!” he shouted, trying to motivate Rybakina. However, the pressure was evident and the player was struggling. In a rare moment of emotion, she responded, “See? It doesn’t work! What are you talking about?!” This confrontation revealed her frustration and the mounting pressure as the set slipped away from her.

Despite losing the first set, the episode seemed to alter her approach. From the second set onwards, she found her rhythm, significantly improving her service consistency and reducing Pegula’s dominance in the rallies. Notably, Rybakina did not lose a single service game after that moment, saving four break points and gradually taking control of the match.

This victory reinforces her record at the Miami Open, where she had previously reached the finals in 2023 and 2024, although she was defeated by Petra Kvitova and Danielle Collins on those occasions. Now, with her focus on Sabalenka, Rybakina is preparing for a rematch of this season’s Indian Wells final, where she came up short. Currently, she occupies a top position in the WTA rankings, but she is over 2,000 points behind Sabalenka, making every encounter crucial in this contest.

The intense relationship between Rybakina and Vukov is not new. Last month, during the Dubai Tennis Championships, a similar episode was recorded. Rybakina was forced to retire from the match against Antonia Ruzic due to physical issues after losing her serve in the final set. She reported feeling “pain in her legs” and “nausea,” choosing to withdraw despite Vukov’s visible concern. This pattern of tension has been recurring, even during successful phases, suggesting that the emotional intensity between player and coach can both enhance her performance and become a distraction.

As she prepares for the clash with Sabalenka, the question arises: can this intense energy translate into success on the court? With the stakes higher than ever, the answer could define her journey in Miami and beyond. The drama continues in the world of tennis, and all eyes will be on Rybakina as she seeks to assert her dominance once again.
