Emma Raducanu is facing a serious injury that could sideline her for the upcoming phases of the season, including the US Open. After an impressive performance at the Queen’s Club Championship, where she was the runner-up, the young British tennis player had to withdraw from Wimbledon at the last minute due to a stress fracture in her right fibula, which turned out to be more serious than initially thought.
The diagnosis, confirmed by MRI scans, indicated a grade four stress fracture, an injury characterized by small cracks in the bone, typically caused by repetitive impacts such as intense jumping or running. This condition explains Raducanu's absence from training during the preparation week for Wimbledon, where she was seen with a walking boot and on crutches in the days following her withdrawal.
The 23-year-old tennis player had promised to fight to be fit for her first match at the All England Club, but the severity of the injury prevented her from competing. According to reports from Telegraph Sport, recovery could take up to two months, but Raducanu is committed to speeding up the process in the hope of participating in the US Open, which begins on August 30.
Dr. Clare Rooms, a sports medicine specialist, explains that the typical symptoms of this injury include localized pain that worsens with high-impact activities such as running or jumping, and improves with rest. Often, these fractures are not visible on conventional X-rays, which can delay diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
Initially, it was expected that Raducanu would return to competition at the Washington DC Open, which began on July 27, but her name is not on the list of participants. She is registered for the Canadian Open, taking place from August 3 to 13, although her presence at the WTA 1000 tournament is uncertain. The next possible events for her return are the Cincinnati Open (August 13 to 23) or the Monterrey Open (August 24 to 30).
This situation represents a significant setback for Raducanu, who has been recovering her form after a challenging season. Her prolonged absence could affect her performance in the coming months, making her recovery and return to the circuit a top priority for the young tennis prospect.
