Gael Monfils, the charismatic French tennis player, became emotional as he opened up about the profound influence his mother has had on his sporting career. As he approaches the end of his journey in tennis, Monfils reflected on how his mother shaped not only his approach to the game but also his confidence over the years.
Since bursting onto the ATP circuit in 2004 at just 18 years old, Monfils quickly made a name for himself. He broke into the top 50 in 2005 and won his first title that same year. With a career marked by 13 ATP singles titles and reaching the semifinals in two Grand Slams, he announced at the age of 39 that 2026 will be his farewell year.
During a press conference at Indian Wells, the former world number 6 revealed a vulnerable side, explaining that even after his impressive performances, such as the semifinal at Roland Garros in 2008, his mother could never see his success without concern. “Even when I was making semifinals in 2008 at Roland Garros, my mother couldn’t say that I was a good tennis player, because in the back of her mind, she always feared that I could get hurt and everything could stop,” Monfils said, highlighting the complexity of his relationship with the sport and maternal protection.
The tennis player continued, highlighting the importance of his mother in encouraging him to enjoy the game: “She always told me to have fun, and I feel that, you know, the young Gael. Now, I haven’t changed, I’ve always had a strong belief in myself. Maybe that’s why everything happened to me.”
With the 2026 season announced as his last, Monfils has faced a mixed phase, having exited in the early rounds of the ASB Classic and the Australian Open, but reaching the round of 16 at the Mexican Open. However, his determination remains, especially as he competes in the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.
In his first match, Monfils showed his grit by defeating Canadian Alexis Galarneau with a convincing 6-3, 6-4. He is now preparing for an exciting showdown against Felix Auger-Aliassime, the tournament’s ninth seed. The two players have faced each other twice before, with Monfils winning their first encounter in 2020, but Auger-Aliassime coming out on top in their last battle, which took place at the 2023 Laver Cup. Their rematch is scheduled for Saturday, March 7, and promises to be an electrifying spectacle.
Monfils, with his mix of talent and emotion, is not just an athlete, but a true inspiration to all who follow him. His journey, now heading towards the end, serves as a powerful reminder of the impact that personal relationships can have on our lives and careers.
