As the crisis in the Middle East escalates, Holger Rune, the young Danish tennis talent, faces a distressing situation in Doha, where he was undergoing rehabilitation. With chaos spreading and a lack of assistance from Copenhagen, the frustration of the Rune family has reached its peak. Holger’s mother and manager, Aneke Rune, did not hesitate to criticize the Danish government, accusing it of abandoning its citizens amid the turmoil.

In statements to the Danish newspaper BT, Aneke Rune expressed the urgency of their situation: “We want to leave. But we still haven’t heard anything from Denmark. This is disappointingly poor. Either we are completely paralyzed in our country, or they simply do not care about their citizens. I think it’s the latter.” Aneke’s indignation was further heightened when she referred to the Danish government’s response, suggesting that there should be someone designated to handle the situation: “Our government can kill minks in 24 hours, introduce bans, and find taxes quickly, but they cannot show creativity to bring Danish citizens home,” she vented.

Aneke did not let herself be shaken by interviewer Jakob Kløcker’s attempts to defend the authorities, who claimed to be working around the clock. “If that’s the case, why don’t they get in touch with us to ask where we are? Or provide a number that we can call at any time? Or offer assistance for accommodation or other things?” she questioned, demonstrating a clear lack of trust in the government’s communication.

Holger’s mother confirmed that her family has already registered on the Danish List, a measure that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends for citizens abroad, aimed at facilitating monitoring and assistance. However, when BT tried to obtain an update on a possible evacuation plan, it received no response. The uncertainty remains.

With the crisis complicating travel, Holger Rune’s situation is becoming increasingly critical. Tensions between Iran, the United States, and Israel have resulted in widespread flight cancellations and airspace disruptions, leaving thousands of people, including more than 40 professional tennis players, stranded in the Gulf region.

While other European nations, such as the United Kingdom, are already taking steps to support their citizens, Denmark seems to be lagging behind. The British government announced operations to assist at least 200,000 British citizens in the Gulf, urging them to register and follow the guidance of local authorities. Prime Minister Keir Starmer addressed the situation, urging citizens in the Middle East to register and follow the travel advice from the Foreign Office.

Aneke Rune’s reality is cruel. Her son remains imprisoned far from home in the midst of a volatile conflict, while awaiting a clear response from Copenhagen. Aneke’s chilling account of the situation in Doha reveals an alarming scenario: “It’s a bit wild. There have been four missile attacks on us today,” she said. “Everything seems more brutal at night with fireballs in the sky and repeated explosions. We spent a lot of time in the reception, but in the end, we went to our rooms and slept. But Holger was really scared last night. There are a lot of brutal news reports and images of attacks around us.”

The uncertainty continues to grow, with players like Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Bublik also sharing their distress. Medvedev expressed the strangeness of the situation, while Bublik described a moment of tension in the air. With the crisis in the Middle East affecting travel plans, the participation of many players in the Indian Wells Masters is now in question.

In light of all this, the question remains: how long will Denmark continue to ignore its citizens in distress? The situation of Holger Rune and his family is a distressing reminder of the urgent need for response and action from the Danish government.
