The 2026 edition of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells was marked by an administrative error that left both fans and players disappointed. The famous tennis player Venus Williams and the promising Leylah Fernandez were excluded from the women’s doubles tournament due to a management failure. Both players were expected to team up in what promised to be one of the major attractions of the tournament, but their names were missing from the official doubles list, raising a wave of criticism and questions about what really happened.
Williams, who was once world number one and a seven-time Grand Slam champion, had received a wildcard for the singles competition and was one of the undeniable stars of the event in California. On the other hand, Fernandez, who was the runner-up at the US Open in 2021 and is among the top 30 players in the WTA ranking, planned to join forces with the veteran after they had a successful campaign together the previous year. Both exited the singles competition early, making their participation in doubles even more important to maintain competitiveness and excitement around their careers.
The problem arose when organizers confirmed that the wildcard entry for the duo had never been formally processed before the doubles draw. When the official list was released, the duo’s name was not present, and the situation became even more embarrassing as the organization had previously announced the partnership. This led to a frustrating outcome for fans who were eagerly anticipating the appearance of this iconic pair.
In statements to the press, a spokesperson for the tournament acknowledged the error, stating that there was a failure to certify the wildcard entry before finalizing the draw. “The tournament made a mistake and failed to certify the entry of the duo of Venus Williams and Leylah Fernandez before the women’s doubles draw,” the spokesperson explained. “We worked with the WTA supervisor to review all possible options, but since the draw had already taken place, the error could not be corrected.”
The absence of Williams and Fernandez not only deprived fans of an exciting display but also had financial repercussions for the players. Even a first-round elimination in the doubles tournament would have guaranteed each approximately $10,000 in prize money. Although both do not rely on these earnings, the failure removed a valuable opportunity to compete and gain experience at a crucial moment in the hard court season.
The pairs that were included in the tournament as wildcards include Emma Raducanu with Elena-Gabriela Ruse, Sloane Stephens with Donna Vekic, and Hailey Baptiste alongside Jelena Ostapenko, but there was no mechanism to replace these entries with the duo of Williams and Fernandez after the draw had already been closed. This situation not only caused frustration among the players and their fans but also left a blemish on the organization of the event, which will have to review its procedures to prevent similar errors from occurring in the future.
“We apologize to Venus, Leylah and their teams for the situation, and we regret that our fans could not see this duo compete at Indian Wells this year,” concluded the spokesperson, leaving a sense that a great spectacle was lost.
