The Italian champion triumphed in California, managing to come out on top against the Russian who had defeated Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-final.

Jannik Sinner won the Masters 1000 at Indian Wells for the first time. His victory at the 1000 tournament in the California desert took place today, Monday, March 16. The Italian champion, ranked number 2 in the ATP rankings, defeated Daniil Medvedev in two sets. The Russian had beaten the number 1 in the ATP rankings, Carlos Alcaraz, in the semi-final, while Jannik had prevailed over Zverev.

This is Sinner’s sixth Masters 1000 title, adding the only 1000 title that was missing from his collection after those won in Toronto, Miami, Cincinnati, Shanghai, and Paris. Jannik, after being eliminated in the semi-finals of the 2026 Australian Open against Djokovic and exiting early in the quarter-finals of the ATP in Doha, returned to victory, claiming his first title of the season.

Both sets were extremely balanced, and Sinner had to rely on his best repertoire to overcome Medvedev, defeating the Russian champion with two tie-break victories. Jannik won the first set 8-6, but in the second, Sinner came back from a 4-0 deficit to take the lead 4-3 with a stroke of luck that allowed him to execute a good backhand passing shot before the point that tied the score at 4-4, after a forehand from Medvedev went just wide, bringing the score back to 4-4.

Jannik moved ahead 5-4 with a smash and then forced Medvedev into an error with a backhand. The comeback was sensational and well-deserved, but it also seemed to carry a certain irony for Medvedev, who had put on a great tournament but faced a superb Sinner.
