João Fonseca is writing a genuine page of glory in world tennis and at the Roland Garros, following a performance that will go down in history! After eliminating Novak Djokovic in an epic five-set battle, the young Portuguese player surprised once again by defeating Norwegian Casper Ruud, one of the favorites and a three-time Grand Slam finalist, with a score of 7-5, 7-6, 5-7, 6-2. This victory takes Fonseca, for the first time in his career, to the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam tournament, an unprecedented achievement for a Portuguese player at this stage of the competition.

The first set was a true war point by point, with Fonseca managing to secure the decisive break in the 11th game, holding his serve until the end to close the set. The second set heightened the tension even further: Fonseca was up by a break, but Ruud equalized. At 5-5, the Portuguese player endured a game that lasted 13 minutes, holding his serve with immense resilience. The tie-break was a nerve-wracking battle lasting 15 minutes of maximum intensity, where Fonseca triumphed 10-8, putting himself ahead by two sets to none and leaving the Norwegian in an extremely difficult situation.

Despite the adverse scenario, Ruud did not give up and launched into a fierce battle in the third set. In a turning moment, the Norwegian broke Fonseca’s serve in the 12th game and closed the set at 7-5, after more than three hours of play, extending the duel until almost midnight.

However, Ruud’s psychological and physical fatigue was evident at the start of the fourth set. The Norwegian suffered a break right in the first game, allowing Fonseca to surge ahead to a commanding 4-1 lead that he maintained, securing his place in the quarter-finals with authority and class.

On the other side of the draw, João Fonseca’s next opponent will be the young Czech Jakub Mensik, who also had an epic battle, defeating Russian Andrey Rublev in five sets, 6-3, 7-6, 4-6, 2-6, 6-3. Mensik started strong, dominating the first two sets, but Rublev responded by winning the third and fourth, forcing a dramatic fifth set. In the crucial moment, Mensik capitalized on Rublev’s errors in the seventh game, took control of the match, and closed it out, saving two dangerous break points in the process.

Thus, the quarter-finals of the lower half of the men’s draw at Roland Garros promise intense emotions, with the clash between Mensik and Fonseca capturing all the attention, while on the other side Jodar faces Zverev.

João Fonseca is proving to be the tournament’s great sensation, defying all expectations and elevating Portugal’s name in world tennis to unprecedented levels. For fans, this is an opportunity to closely follow a rising talent that promises many more achievements ahead on the international circuit.
