Matteo Berrettini reveals chronic diagnosis after fall at Wimbledon.

Matteo Berrettini shocked the tennis world by revealing that he has been diagnosed with chronic hip pain shortly after being eliminated from Wimbledon, casting doubt on his participation in upcoming tournaments. The Italian, who seemed on the verge of a strong return to the elite, is now forced to take a break at a crucial point in the season.

After a promising start at Wimbledon, where he defeated Stan Wawrinka and Arthur Fils, Berrettini dramatically fell in the third round against Grigor Dimitrov, in an intense match that ended with scores of 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 5-7, 6-3. The elimination, already difficult to digest, was quickly overshadowed by a concerning diagnosis: chronic hip pain, which will keep him out of competition for the coming weeks. The tennis player aims to return before the US Open to regain competitive rhythm ahead of the last Grand Slam of the season.

Berrettini announced his decision to step back through social media, leaving a message for fans on his Instagram account: “Hello everyone, I just wanted to share an update: unfortunately, I will no longer play in Gstaad and Kitzbühel. After discussions with my doctor and team, I have been diagnosed with chronic hip pain, and I have been advised that the best option is to withdraw and rest to be ready for the tour in the United States. Thank you for your continued support, and I’ll see you soon on the fast courts.” The Italian's words reflect the frustration of someone whose career has repeatedly been halted by physical issues.

The situation is not new for Berrettini. He had already experienced similar problems with his hip at Roland Garros, which forced him to retire in the quarter-finals against compatriot Matteo Arnaldi. After losing the first set 7-5, the pain worsened, and he was forced to withdraw in the second set while trailing 5-2. This injury ended his hopes of reaching the semi-finals in Paris for the first time. His preparation for Wimbledon was also affected due to the same physical limitation in the grass tournaments leading up to the London Grand Slam, although he managed to recover in time.

The persistence of injuries has been a real nightmare for the Italian. Last season, recurring injuries forced him to miss two of the four major tournaments on the circuit. In May, just days before Roland Garros, he injured his right oblique during the match against Casper Ruud at the Rome Masters, leading to his retirement with Ruud ahead 7-5, 2-0. The recovery was not enough for him to be present in Paris, and although he returned at Wimbledon, he was eliminated in the first round by Kamil Majchrzak in a five-set match. He then spent two months away from competition, resulting in another absence, this time at the US Open. It was only in September that he returned to the circuit, participating in the Hangzhou Open, where he was eliminated in the first round by Czech Dalibor Svrcina.

Now, with the threat of another prolonged break, Berrettini is forced to manage his recovery carefully to avoid further injuries compromising his season. Italian tennis and its fans are eagerly awaiting the return of one of their biggest talents, hoping he can overcome this latest physical obstacle.
