The fourth round of the WTA 1000 Qatar Open brought intense emotions and unexpected twists, with rising players making history and veterans struggling to regain their form. The tournament, which has become one of the key events of the season, saw the confirmation of the eight players who advanced to the quarter-finals. Among them are Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina, who, despite some scares, managed to stay on course for glory.
Victoria Mboko, the 19-year-old Canadian sensation, starred in an epic duel against her compatriot Mirra Andreeva, 18. This clash was not just a fight for victory, but also an opportunity for redemption for Mboko, who had lost to Andreeva in the final of the Adelaide tournament a month ago. With a final score of 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(5), Mboko even saved a match point before securing her place in the quarter-finals, marking a memorable debut in Qatar. “I was able to find solutions for her level, which had caused me a lot of problems before,” said Mboko, who is now just one win away from breaking into the top 10 of the rankings, although she faces the tough task of stopping Rybakina’s impressive nine-match winning streak.
At the other end of the court, Iga Swiatek faced an unexpected challenge against Daria Kasatkina, a player looking to regain her form. After a surprising first set, where Kasatkina managed an impressive comeback, Swiatek demonstrated her true strength, completely dominating the following sets with an impressive 6-1, 6-1. “I needed to find my rhythm, but once I did, it was just a matter of time before the pressure reversed,” said Swiatek, who is now preparing to face Maria Sakkari in the quarter-finals.
The Greek Sakkari, in turn, showed that she is back in contention after a long absence from the top ranks, defeating Varvara Gracheva with a convincing 7-6(4), 6-0. “Being back in the quarter-finals of a WTA 1000 is a big step for me,” said Sakkari, who will rise in the rankings after securing her spot among the top 50 players.
Karolina Muchova also stood out by advancing to the quarter-finals, benefiting from Karolina Pliskova’s withdrawal due to injury. The Czech player, known for her consistency, is in pursuit of another spot in the semifinals of a WTA 1000, a feat she has achieved on three previous occasions.
Jelena Ostapenko, the 2025 finalist, continued her excellent form by eliminating Camila Osorio in under an hour, demonstrating impressive control throughout the match. “These courts are ideal for my playing style; I’m happy with my performance,” commented Ostapenko, who is now preparing to face Elisabetta Cocciaretto, one of the tournament’s major surprises.
Cocciaretto, for her part, had an exciting journey, overcoming Ann Li after a three-set battle, and is one step away from securing her first appearance in the semifinals of a WTA 1000 event. “I never thought I would get this far in the tournament. I’m enjoying every moment,” expressed Cocciaretto.
Finally, Anna Kalinskaya, the 28-year-old Russian, secured her place in the quarterfinals with a victory over Elina Svitolina, showing renewed confidence and the ability to remain calm in critical moments. “It was a tough match, but I managed to impose my rhythm,” said Kalinskaya, who will now face a formidable opponent in Muchova.
With a combination of young talents and experienced players, the WTA 1000 Qatar Open promises even more excitement in the upcoming stages, where every match becomes an epic battle for a spot on the podium. The players are ready to give their all, and fans are eagerly awaiting more surprises and masterful plays in this thrilling tournament.
