Tension in the world of tennis reaches new heights with the recent situation involving major stars of the ATP circuit. The long-awaited draw for the 2026 Indian Wells Open has already taken place, but the participation of Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev, and Karen Khachanov is shrouded in uncertainty that has left fans of the sport holding their breath. Following their participation in the Dubai Tennis Championships, where Medvedev was crowned champion, celebrations quickly turned into a logistical nightmare.
On Saturday, airspace in the Middle East was closed due to joint military actions between Israel and the United States against Iran, leading to an escalation of tensions in the region. The Iranian government’s response was swift and alarming, with attacks on American bases, including one in Dubai, resulting in the suspension of flights. The situation became even more critical when it was confirmed that Medvedev and Rublev were among the players who could not leave in time, creating chaos in the preparations for Indian Wells.
“Unfortunately, we will not be able to participate in the Eisenhower Cup,” said Medvedev and Rublev in statements that echo the frustrations of many athletes in the same situation. Mirra Andreeva, who was set to partner with Medvedev, will now team up with Alexander Bublik, while Amanda Anisimova will have Learner Tien as her partner following Rublev’s withdrawal. Despite the setbacks, the three players are still scheduled to compete in the singles tournament, with the main draw taking place on Monday.
Medvedev is positioned as the 10th seed and will face one of the players, Alejandro Tabilo or Rafa Jodar, in the second round. Meanwhile, Khachanov, the 16th seed, will go up against Joao Fonseca or Rafael Collignon, while Rublev, ranked 17th, will meet Mattia Bellucci or Gabrial Diallo.
When will the players take to the court? The official Indian Wells Open website revealed that the men’s second-round matches are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, giving Medvedev, Rublev, and Khachanov a few days to reach California. Dubai announced that its airspace reopened on Monday night, but available flights are scarce. If they are unable to board direct flights to the United States, there is the possibility of a land trip to Oman, where they could catch a private flight to Turkey or Armenia before heading to their final destination.
In addition to the mentioned protagonists, other tennis players, including Harri Heliovaara, Henry Patten, Marcelo Arevalo, and Mate Pavic, also remain in Dubai, but they have a bit more leeway, as the first-round doubles matches do not begin until Sunday.
In the current context of uncertainties and geopolitical tensions, the Indian Wells Open promises to be a battleground not only on the courts but also for the athletes who are struggling to arrive in time and compete in one of the most prestigious tournaments on the tennis calendar. The fight for adaptation in difficult times is a recurring theme in sports, and in this case, the resilience of these athletes will be tested like never before.
