A few days before the highly anticipated Miami Open, the list of withdrawals continues to grow, leaving fans and organizers on high alert. An impressive total of 13 players, including a trio of highly decorated Czech stars, have already confirmed they will not participate in the tournament, raising concerns about the competition at this prestigious event.

Among the withdrawals are five former WTA top 10 players, including a former world number one and two Grand Slam champions. The situation is alarming, especially considering that just on Thursday, the number of withdrawals had already reached eight, encompassing both the women’s and men’s categories.

The finals of Indian Wells, the first stage of the so-called US Sunshine Double, are about to take place, but attention is already turning to Miami, where the main action is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, March 17, following the conclusion of the qualifying matches. The tournament, held at the iconic Hard Rock Stadium, will conclude on March 29, and it will be interesting to see how the absences impact the dynamics of the competition.

Defending champions Aryna Sabalenka and Jakub Mensik, both winners of the Miami Open last year, will be eager to defend their titles, but the list of absentees cannot be overlooked.

Among the most notable withdrawals from the WTA list are Lois Boisson, Oleksandra Oliynykova, and Wang Yafan, who pulled out earlier this week. Boisson, currently ranked 37th in the world, has not competed since September due to an injury, making her the highest-ranked player to withdraw from the tournament. She is joined by big names such as Marketa Vondrousova, Barbora Krejcikova, Karolina Pliskova, Daria Kasatkina, and Veronika Kudermetova, bringing the total number of women’s withdrawals to eight.

Krejcikova, a former world number 2 and two-time Grand Slam winner, and Vondrousova, the 2023 Wimbledon champion and former number 6, exemplify the caliber of players who will not be in Miami. Karolina Pliskova, a dominant force on the tour, also joins the list, bringing with her an impressive record as a former number 1 and two-time runner-up in major tournaments.

The men’s withdrawals are not far behind, with Holger Rune, Tallon Griekspoor, and Jaume Munar pulling out of the event even before it began. Rune and Griekspoor, both potential seeds in Miami, will not be present, and starting Thursday, Lorenzo Sonego and Jerry Shang also joined the list of absentees, increasing the count of men’s withdrawals to five.

The players who will replace the withdrawals have already been designated, with notable mentions including Katie Boulter, Julia Grabher, and Simona Waltert, among others. As the tournament approaches, anticipation grows to see how the organizers will handle these changes and who will emerge as the new favorite in a landscape filled with uncertainties.

The countdown to the Miami Open continues, and what once seemed like a star-studded tournament is now turning into a field of opportunities for new talents, while the veterans struggle to make their mark. The question remains: who will seize this chance and stand out in the arena of Hard Rock Stadium?
