Madrid Open in turmoil: Mirra Andreeva and Marta Kostyuk promise explosive showdown in the final

The Spanish capital is buzzing with anticipation for the Madrid Open final, where young star Mirra Andreeva, just 19 years old, faces Marta Kostyuk in a clash that promises to shake the tennis world. Despite being favored by the bookmakers, Andreeva remains grounded and downplays the pressure of her ranking position.

Andreeva secured her spot in the final with a hard-fought victory over 30th seed Hailey Baptiste, with scores of 6-4 and 7-6(10-8). On the other side, Kostyuk eliminated lucky loser Anastasia Potapova, triumphing 6-2, 1-6, and 6-1, confirming her debut in a WTA 1000 final. For Andreeva, this will be her third final at this level, having won titles at the Dubai Tennis Championships and the Indian Wells Open in 2025, while Kostyuk is vying for her first glory at this level.

The disparity in the official rankings is evident: Andreeva occupies 8th place, with a high of 5th, while Kostyuk is ranked 23rd, having previously reached 16th. The favorite emerged even stronger after the elimination of world number 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the quarter-finals, but Andreeva dismisses that label with a carefree smile: “I hadn’t even thought about that until now (laughs). For me, any player who reaches the semi-finals is playing very well and deserves to be there.”

The young Russian reveals her philosophy for the match: “It doesn’t matter who the opponent is, I will complicate her life as much as possible. If she beats me, I will say ‘good job, you deserved the victory,’ and I will try to be proud of my performance. But, if I win, she will have to work very hard, and that is the mentality with which I enter this final.”

Regarding favoritism, Andreeva is categorical: “I do not consider myself the favorite. I know that anyone who reaches the final is a tough opponent. I have learned not to pay attention to the ranking or the name of the opponent. I will focus on the game plan we have drawn up with my coach, Conchita Martínez, because that is what I can control.”

The clash between the two is practically a debut on the WTA circuit, with only one previous meeting at the start of the 2026 season, where Kostyuk triumphed in Brisbane by 7-6(7-3), 6-3. “It was a very difficult match, but now it’s under totally different conditions,” said Kostyuk, showing confidence for the final. “I am excited because it’s a final, and she is a solid player with a powerful serve and an aggressive game. It will be a challenge, but I am prepared.”

This matchup promises to be an unmissable spectacle, with two rising young stars competing for a title that could catapult their careers to another level. The Madrid Open could not have a more electrifying final to close the tournament!
