The electrifying and charged atmosphere during the BNP Paribas Open tournament in Indian Wells, where Novak Djokovic faced Jack Draper, did not go unnoticed, but the Serbian tennis player chose not to criticize the fans. In a statement that surprised many, Djokovic defended the passion of the spectators, even in the face of provocative behaviors observed during the tournament.
At the epicenter of the controversies, fans expressed themselves intensely, especially during the match between Jannik Sinner and Joao Fonseca, where a specific spectator stood out for provoking the Italian. Additionally, the crowd’s reaction to the chair umpire during the clash between Elena Rybakina and Sonay Kartal also drew negative comments. However, Djokovic, who has won the tournament five times, did not let these incidents affect him.
“I don’t know what kind of situation you’re referring to, but, I mean, there were several – it is what it is. It’s the excitement of the crowd as well. I understand that people, sometimes, in the heat of the moment, in a battle like today’s, get excited during the point and, you know, maybe between the points – yes, they get excited. I don’t judge, I don’t criticize anyone,” said the former world number one.
The clash between Djokovic and Draper, held at the iconic Stadium Court 1, was a spectacle in itself, with fans cheering at every point. The match culminated in an exhilarating victory for Draper, who managed to defeat Djokovic 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(5), leaving the crowd ecstatic and the tension palpable.
After the defeat, Djokovic did not hide the bitter feeling that accompanied him. “I feel bitter right now, losing a match like this. But I am proud of myself for fighting and giving everything on the court. That is for sure. That’s the only thing I will take away as a highlight, you know, just the fact that I didn’t give up and tried,” said the tennis player, who is now preparing to participate in the Miami Open, the next challenge on the circuit.
The Indian Wells tournament may have ended for Djokovic, but the fierce competition and the passion of the fans will remain in the memory of all involved. The next stage of the ‘Sunshine Double’ promises to bring more excitement, as the 38-year-old tennis player seeks to recover and demonstrate his resilience on the courts of Florida.
