Novak Djokovic faces a crucial dilemma: the shadow of injury threatens his ambition at Roland Garros

Novak Djokovic, the living legend of world tennis, now finds himself at a crossroads that could define his immediate future and his pursuit of a 25th Grand Slam title – a historic record that would place him at the absolute pinnacle of tennis. His recent early exit at the Rome Masters, at the hands of young Croatian Dino Prizmic, has cast a shadow over his aspirations for the upcoming Roland Garros tournament.

The unexpected defeat to Prizmic not only marked the beginning of the young Croatian talent’s rise, who surpassed his idol in a moment that will forever be etched in his career, but also highlighted Djokovic’s physical and competitive vulnerabilities. The Serbian, who last year benefited from participating in Geneva to gain momentum before reaching the semi-finals in Paris, this time decided against competing in any preparatory tournaments before the French Grand Slam, opting for an approach that now appears risky.

Djokovic, who has always shown a selective approach to the ATP calendar, prefers a week of intensive training at Roland Garros to participating in an ATP 250 tournament, but this decision comes at a cost: the lack of competitive rhythm on clay, which can be fatal in a tournament where concentration and endurance are crucial to overcoming seven marathons of five sets.

The approach of the tennis player’s 39th birthday, which he will celebrate later this month, adds an extra layer of uncertainty regarding his physical and mental capacity to face such a demanding schedule. After surprising the tennis world by reaching the final of the Australian Open in January, eliminating names like Jannik Sinner, what seemed like a return to peak form no longer appears sufficient to dispel the doubts that have accompanied him since then.

Since that Australian final, Djokovic has played only four competitive matches, a clearly insufficient number to prepare for the complexity and intensity of Roland Garros. His absence from competitions and the physical problems that have plagued him raise the question: is it worth risking everything in a tournament where his form is in doubt?

The most plausible scenario points to Wimbledon, the stage where Djokovic could realistically attempt to secure his 25th Grand Slam and surpass Margaret Court as the greatest winner in the history of the four Majors. The Serbian may opt for a strategic withdrawal from the French tournament, dedicating the next month to recovery and preparing his bid for the English title, which will begin on June 29.

To this end, Djokovic could participate in a grass-court warm-up tournament, such as Halle or Queen’s Club in London, before focusing on the All England Club. However, the injuries that continue to trouble him may even jeopardize that option, leaving the tennis world in suspense.

Following his defeat in Rome, Djokovic did not hide his frustration, admitting to the physical difficulties he faced: “It’s not an ideal preparation, to be honest. I don’t remember the last time, in the last few years, that I entered a tournament without any physical or health issues. There’s always something. It’s a new reality that I have to deal with. It’s frustrating, but it’s my decision to keep competing under these conditions. It is what it is.”

With his time running out to continue challenging the best in the world, and in a year that could be his last big chance to win another Grand Slam title, Djokovic faces a difficult choice. The priority must be his best chance of success, and that may mean sacrificing Roland Garros to arrive in full force at Wimbledon.

The tennis world is anxiously awaiting Novak Djokovic’s decision, knowing that it could be crucial for his legacy and the outcome of one of the most unpredictable seasons of his career. Will the Serbian risk it all in Paris, or will he choose a more cautious strategy on the road to grass-court glory? The answer to this pressing question is about to be revealed.
