Novak Djokovic, one of the greatest names in tennis history, left a message full of respect and admiration for Jack Draper after a surprising defeat in an exciting fourth-round match at the Indian Wells Open 2026. Draper’s victory over the Serbian, with scores of 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(5), lasted an impressive two hours and 35 minutes, securing the Brit a place in the quarter-finals of this prestigious Masters 1000 tournament.

Jack Draper, currently ranked 14th in the world, delivered a remarkable performance by eliminating the defending champion, who won the title at Indian Wells the previous year. This was only the second meeting between the two players; the first, at Wimbledon 2021, ended with a victory for Djokovic in four sets. The Serbian player, ranked third in the world, was seeking his first title at Indian Wells since 2016, his sixth overall.

After the match, Djokovic took to his Instagram account to comment on his elimination, highlighting his opponent’s talent and expressing gratitude to the fans who supported him. “A tough night in the desert,” wrote the 24-time Grand Slam champion. “Respect to @jackdraper, you deserve it. Great to see you back in the fight. Keep it up. And to everyone who supported me here this week, thank you for the energy. There’s no place like tennis paradise. See you soon.”

In the press conference following the match, Djokovic did not hide his disappointment, referring to the bitter feeling of losing such a competitive match. “Yes, I don’t know. I feel a bitter feeling right now, losing a match like that,” admitted the 38-year-old tennis player. “But I am proud of myself for fighting and really giving it my all on the court. That’s for sure. The highlight for me was not giving up and trying. I lost to a great player, and it was a very balanced match over the two and a half hours. But, of course, I am a bit disappointed to be leaving the court. I wish I could have done better, but it was a good fight.”

Djokovic’s next challenge will be at the Miami Open, the second stage of the Sunshine Double in the United States, taking place in March, shortly after Indian Wells. He is on the entry list for this ATP Masters 1000 tournament, where the main matches will occur between March 17 and 29. Djokovic, who was the runner-up in Miami in 2025, holds a record of six titles at the event, tying with Andre Agassi.

Djokovic’s defeat raises questions about his performance in prestigious tournaments, while Draper establishes himself as an emerging force on the circuit. Anticipation now grows around how Djokovic will respond and bounce back in Miami, where his determination will once again be put to the test.
